HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1989-02-08, Page 11Luekno w Sentinel, Wednesday9 FebniaryX91959—Page 11 Bruce County Board of Educatkrn names ad hoc eminnittees At the January meeting of the 13ruce County Board of Education, four trustees absent from the inaugural meeting took the Declaration and Oath of Allegiance; Eloise Calhoun, Ray Fenton, Robert Mills and Dr. Percy Pletsch. Frank.Eagleson presented the report of the Striking Committee, stating that each committee would name its own chairman. He stated that the Special Education Ad- visory Committee was comprised of trusteesand non -trustees appointed by the local -associations to hold office until November 30, 1991. Eagleson stated .that the Striking Committee was requesting that the Policy Committee be requested to review the process of appointing commit- tees and -stressed the importance of trustee attendance at every committee meeting. The followingrecommendations regarding appointment of trustees to the Standing Committees were adopted by the board: °Special Education Advisory Committee : Craig Otto, Dr. Percy Pletsch and Donald Stobo. LI Finance Committee: Ray Fenton, Gerald .Hatt, David Inglis, Mike Snobelen, Donald Tedford. Finance Committee The board will renew its coverage for Group Accident Insurance with John . Sutherland and SonsLimited forthe period December 1, 1988 to November 30, 1989 to cover trustees on school board business. The board also authorized theaforemen- tioned company to make available to all students-irrBruc County,Schoolsinforma tion and application forms for Student Ac- cident Insurance for the school years 198990, 199091 and 199192, in accordance with the plan offered by Reliable Life In- surance Company,.including Dental option number two. Enrolment in this plan is voluntary and premium cost will be born by the parent. In accordance with a motion passed by the board in March 1988, theFinance Com- mittee had reviewed the travel rate and recommended it be increased by the cost of living for this year which was 12.1 per- cent. Effective January 1, 1989, the travel rate for board business is 27.1 cents per kilometer, with:. the rate to :be reviewed annually. Governnent remedies errors The provincial government today an- nounced remedies for clients experiencing difficulty in cashing their JanuaryFamily Benefits Assistance (FBA) cheques. Due to a printing error,an undetermined number of cheques: payable to:FBA reci- pients throughout the province : were printed without theProvincial Treasurer's signature. Iii the interests of FBA recipients, the government .has authorized banks and branches -of the Province of Ontario Sav- ings Office to cash their cheques without the signature. Clients :who itlll have difficulty cashing their cheques are advised to contact the nearest office of the °Ministry of'Comrnuni- ty and Social Services. Each office will nn - mediately re -issue the cheque for ,the recipient. The exact number and mailing -locations of the affected cheques is not possible to determine. 'The rninistrrj ' issues approx- imately 175,000 FBA cheques per month. Elementary Class Size Committee This committee is comprised of Lorraine iirguhart, President of Bruce Women Teachers' Association; Eileen Phillips, President of Ontario Public School Teachers' Federtion - Bruce District; Ronald Gatis forthe Board and P. E. Cole, Superintendent of Personnel. The committee has met on two occasions to review class size and staffing practices and the following recommendations were presented: that articles 24.04 and 24.05 remain in the collective agreement as a mechanism for ensuring effective communication bet- ween the branch affiliates and the board on the matter of class size; -that when the general school organization for each school is being planned, special attention should be given to the size of classes into which special education pupils will be integrated andor withdrawn; -that the board and branch affiliates con- tinue to recognize the local autonomy of each school to develop its own school organization to effectively meet the needs of its pupils and parents. Learning Disabilites Bruce Cohoon, 'Kincardine and District Association for the Mentally Retarded -Okal Day, Ontario Societyfor Autistic Citizens -Caroline Gorski, W.E. Thompson Home and School Association Robert Martin, Huron Heights Home and School Association -Ruth McGuire, Elderslie Home and School Assocation -Eva Nickel, Wiarton and District Associa- tion for the Mentally Retarded Ad Hoc Committees The following ad hoc committees, assisted by adrninistrative officials, will function .until their work is completed: Collective Agreement - Elementary: Ray Fenton, Eloise Calhoun, Ronald Gatis, Harriet Kewaquom, Robert Mills :1 Collective Agreement - Secondary : David Inglis, Frank Eagleson, Percy Pletsch, Mike Snobelen, Gordon Thomspon ::Salaries Non -Academic ' Personnel : Gerald Hatt, Eloise Calhoun, Craig Otto, Donald Stobo, Donald Tedford P. Cole, P. Martindale and T. Veenstra will act as administrative officials' for the above three committees. °Policy: Eloise Calhoun, Ronald Gatis, Harriett Kewaquom, Donald Stobo, Mike Snobelen; Mr. C. Beamer and appropirate superintendent as administrative officials °Educational Issues: 'Frank Eagleson, Eloise Calhoun, Harriett Kewaquom, Robert 'Mills, Gordon 'Thompson; B. Giles and appropriate superintendent for adminstration ]Property Committee (plus Iocal trustee for concerned area): Donald Tedford, Frank Eagleson, Gerald Hatt, Robert Mills, Craig Otto; T. Veenstra and Mr. Sharp for adminstration °Public Relations: Gerald Gatis, Ray Fenton, Percy Pletsch and Gordon'Thornp- son assisted by P. Carroll, P. Mar- tindale and T. Veenstra °Ontario Public School Board's Associa- tion representative : Ronald Gatis, with Eloise Calhoun as alternate. The board chairman, local trustee(s) and director of education will sitson the committee to discuss zoning by-laws, secondary plans and official plans with municipalities concerned. A trustee named by the board chairman, the: superintendent of schools,fortheschool concerned and a nonemployee of the board to be named by the director will sit on the Supervised Alternative Learning for Excused Pupils Committee.
