HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1989-01-04, Page 5`Tis the season to be jolly and thuunkfull.
We at the Holyrood Play 'School are very
appreciative of sill the support we have
received during the pastyear.
Our youngsters 'have 'been busy:playing,
going on fieldirips, making crafts, having
parties and enjoying each others' com-
pany. A few new faces joined us this year
and we gladly welcomed then.
We would like at this time to thank the
Dinettes for graciously offering us the op-
portunity to participate in their craft and
bake sale. It was- a worthwhile day as the
proceeds from our table will help to defray
our ongoing costs. As well, our Christmas
Raffle was a =great success. The lucky win-
ner was Stuart Eadie, R. 3, Holyrood.
Thank you to all who supported our bake
table and participated in our raffle.
Without the moms, dads, grandparents
and of course, the thildren, there would be
no play school. But withoutthe generous
support of our community the experience
would not be as rewarding for our
children.
Season's greetings to all.

I wouldn't want to be without the Sentinel.
I enjoyed the tribute to Aunt Myrtle Mo-
Quiliin. She was a wonderful person, and
always worked hard. Myrtle M. was my
dad's sister. Richard McQuillin certainly
paid tribute to his grandmother.

Dear Editor:
There has been considerable confusion
in the community about compensation for
those affected by the default of the
Brussels stockyard.
The Beef Financial Protection Fundpro-
gram is designed to provide compensation
in cases such as this and has been ex-
tremely efficient and effective in dealing
with the claims of those who met the
criteria.
The program, which was established in
1982 after extensive consultations with the
industry, is designed to ° protect Ontario
producers, but not those from other
provinces.
-As a result, out of total claims of $800,000
which have beenproeessed so far, -$2.57,000
have not beenacceptedforpayment bythe
Beef Financial Protection Fund .Board
because the transactions took place out-
side the province. The board is made .up of
representatives of the beef industry.
The remaining $543,000 in claims pro-
cessed to date came from Ontario. Since
the program is designed to cover 90 per-
cent of the losses, Ontario producers could
have received payments of. about$489,000.
Payments of; 369;000 have already been
made to 77 Ontario producers todate. This
includesthe four4-H members whose cat -
.
at. tie were affected by the Brussels default.
Another 21 claims have been rejected
because the board ruled.theyndid not meet
the criteria of the program. Any .person
-who. has bad a :claim rejected canappeal
directly tothe.board.
The largest number were rejected
because the applicant had not cashed the
cheque from *Brussels stockyards within
.five days of receiving it.This frveYday-rule
has beenin effectethea began
in 1982and.is designed .to a the pro-
ducerfollows good business practices and
does not extend credit. °
I :have been .impressed with the speed,
fairness and efficiency of those who ad-
-minister4he program. It can often be dif-
ficult to determinewhois.aleetimate prro-
ducer :thing that is -nece ary to
preserve the :integrity of the program.
After all, it is producers' money :in .the
fund.
Early in the new year,•theboard:will be
considering another four: applicantswhich
were late in :being submitted.
The Brussels Situation shows the value
of this program, which has paid outalmost
$1.9: million to producers since 1942.
For -77 producers affected by the
.Brussels default, the .program has 'made
all the difference in •the: world.
