PL. r, -Write the Editor! Darkroont panic Piave just spent the most -worrisome 25 minutes on the job I have ever ex- ' perienced in the past 11 years! With my promotion to editor came a duty I have avoided like the plague - -developing pictmies ! Yes we have our own..darkroom in the LliCklIOW office and the only time 11 previously went .in was to obtain water for the plants or sweep the floor. Taking picturesior The Sentinel in the beginningwas a nerve wracking proposi- tion ! There aresome "friends" outthere who whenever they see me -on a picture assignment love to oak "are you sure you have a film in the camera?" They have experienced , over the previous years a few problems we have run into with dif- ferent staff members. In order to alleviate this problem The Sentinel pur- chased what I call an "idiot proof camera".and lately Ihavenote.xperienc- ed too many difficulties in this area. However, the "idiot" still has to be sure there is film in the camera. Developing and printing the film is . anothermatter. Ad Manager Tom took it upon himself to teach me this process. My biggest worry atthetimewasmixing the ;chemicals properly. Little did I realize this was theeasiest part ! Afterpreparingtheequipmentneeded, you must turn off the lights in the „ciarkrojun—This_ineans_yomare_Indeed_ worldng -in the -dark ! ! A can openerisus- ed to remove the Elm from the canister andthen you -must (stillinthe_dark) clip ends of the Elm straight across. /Now 1 .have a difficult time ratting a straight linein a folly litromn. Next -you fold one end ofthefilin over.andthen pro- ceed to insert it under a clip_ on a aluminum reel. -This may sound easy but Amimapies 13y Pat Livingstot 11111111111111111111MEMNImmommemmil believe me it isn't. Once you have the filin secururyou proceed to roll the film on the reel (still in thedark ) makingsure it does not bind or that film touches any other part of the film. Everyone who is •experienced in the darkroom tells me this will be perfected with time. The problem is if the film is touching another area °Utile film you -end op with white spotwon the frame in question. 1 practised this process at home over the holidays many times. Mr. Fixit thought I had flipped outthe first time he witnessed this performance. Be even weritso far as to say there was no way I would be able to master all that in the dark! Developing day arrived and into the 4' x 5' room I go equipped with my precious film. Equipment is placed in convenient spots to be reached and I turn out the lights. Claustrophobia set in. Panic time! There was no way I could turn on the light before I had that film sealed in a canister. I carefully listen as I roll the film; a crinkling sound indicItes you are not put- ting it on straight. No crinkling sounds - into the canister, piton the lid and grab for the light switch. I am now breathing again - Next came the long wait while the film - sits lin the -ding sohition duthi which time you shake the canister at in- tervals, prepare 70 degree water for the stop bath, and measure out the fix. Sounds easy right? Obtaining 70 degree -water out of the tap is a pain in the butt. I either had it tooliot or too cold. The pro- cess is nearly completion.
