TheExistfig Situation Currently there are l7municipal landfill sites in the county. Although estimates vary with regard to the remaining capacities of the sites, Table 4A' outlines the estimates -which have been established for the purposes off this study. Expressed is a different way this information in- dicates- that n-dicates°that within 20 years all residents in the county will have the landfillsite-that they use currently filled to capacity. Estimates of -Waste Quantities Because lamdfill sites do not have weigh scales it is difficult to determine the amount of waste generated. However, it is estimated that about 42;000 tonnes of waste wasAlisposed of in Huron County in 1988. An increased amount of garbage can be expected over time. The total quanity of waste which must be managed over the 20 year planning period for :which this study is being prepared (1991 to 2010) is estimated to be -880,000 tonnes. Cost of Waste Management The municipal -cow of collecting and disposing of waste are also increasing every year. On average across the county, the costs to municipalities of waste collec- tion (where provided) anddisposaFremain lower than the costs which are faced by a great many Ontario municipalities. However, itis felt that they are also lower —than the costs likely to be raced ireHurorr County in the future Upcoming -Issues In preparation for upcoming stages when assessments 'will begun with regard to appropriate methods and locations for disposing of waste, a list oxf alternatives for dealing with waste is prekeeie d in the Stage 1 Report. These re: 1. Methods to reduce the amount Of waste requiring .disposal : -redudtion of waste generation recycling -composting -mechanized materialseparation 2. Methods to reduce the v 'glume of waste : shredding incineration -energy from waste export of waste 3. Methods to make waste disposal more efficient or economic: :transfer stations -import of waste 4. New sites for disposal of waste : landfill What -Happens Next? Following a review of the Stage 1 Preliminary Report by the public and government agencies, a Final Stage 1 Report will be submitted to the county council for their acceptance. These decisions viIl4 be based partly on the results of an evaluation questionnaire, which all residents of The Huron County will have anopportilnity to complete. The questionnaire will ask people to indicate the priorities they feel should be placed on ensuring -'that various components of the environment are protected from potential impact -s off a waste disposal system. The results will provide an indication of the values held by residents of the -county as a whole. The categories addressed in the ques- tionnaire are : Public Health and Safety -Social Environment -Natural Environment Resource Use -Community Economic Environment -Technical Considerations -Archaeological and Heritage Resources Copies of the evaluation questionnaire maybe obtained at the public meetings or by contacting Jo -Anne Richter .at the Huron\County Department of Planning and Development.
