Turn your lights on, the judges are around
I cannot believe that I am about to
celebrate my second Christmas in Ripley.
Where did the past year go, what happened
to the spring, summer and fall. I hardly
remember their passing but pass they must
have. So what do I do now with all those jobs
I was going to get done this year, the spare
room I was going to finish, the ceiling tile in
the upstairs bathroom I was going to
replace, the two chimneys that were to. be
rebricked and the sink drain that has run
slowly ever since we moved in. There is only
one solution, they will have to be done this
coming year, but how I am going to manage
it I don't know. After all, last year was a
leap year so 1989 will pass even quicker.
This being the last column to be printed
before Christmas, I would like to take this
opportunity to thank all those who have con-
tributed news items to be placed in the
Ripley Express, Joye, Cherie, Debbie and I
would like to join Ab Wylds in wishing you
all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New
`year.
Thanks for the help
A special thanks is given to Keith Pollock
for all his help with the installation of the
Christmas lights. Without the use of his

equipment and his generous donation. we
would not be able to afford the purchase and
installation of 10 more lights next year. ALso
thanks are given to Glady Huston for her
donation.
Turn your lights on tonight
All those families entered in the Light Up
Your Village contest, don't forget to have
them turned on around 8 p.m. on Dec. 21 so
the judges can see your efforts.
Women's Missionary
The afternoon Women's Missionary Socie-
ty of Knox Presbyterian Church, Ripley met
at Huron Villa for their December meeting.
Mrs. Hazel MacDonald was hostess.
In the absence of president Mrs. Hackett,
Mrs. MacDonald presided for the meeting.
She opened the meeting with prayer "The
Journey to Christmas" and advent worship
service in the Glad tidings was followed
through with Mrs.' Gladys Huston, Mrs.
Hazel MacDonald and Mrs. Sadie McLeod
taking part. Pianist Mrs. Nugent played the
hymns, Silent Night, Hark the Herald
Angels Sing and The First Noel. The Scrip-
ture and meditations were read by Gladys
Huston Luke Ch. 2 Verse 1-7, Sadie McLeod
Luke Ch. 2 Verse 8-16 and Hazel MacDonald
Matthew Ch. 2 Verse 1-12.
Mrs. Nugent spoke on the symbols of
Christmas. The tree - Martin Luther King is
thought to have had the first Christmas tree
- a thought of God's beauty. Baking - we
bake at Christmas with the thought in mind
of friends and relatives dropping in to bring
happiness in to our homes. Santa - brings a
thought of sharing and giving. Flowers - the
holly with its thorns and red berries reminds
us of the crown of thorns the Lord wore, and
the red berries His blood that was shed for
us. Mistletoe - a plant that is nourished by
the tree or shrub it clings to, reminds us of
the strength we receive from Christ. There
are more symbols, bells, candles and tinsel,
all have a thought to remind us of the real
meaning of Christmas. She read different
passages of the Bible pertaining to
Christmas, followed with prayer.
The new officers were installed by Mrs.
Cameron McAuley.
For the soldier who wondered why
REMEMBRANCE
BY JODI WEBSTER,
GRADE 8,
BROOKSIDE
As he sighed; he wondered why
He had to watch allvhis friends die.
Such courage it took to stand up for all.
When commanded, he answered the call.
He tried his best to always defeat
And hoped so much he would not be, beat.
He never would stop his great victory
fight,
As freedom for his country, he wanted the
right.
He thought often of all families praying
And of the great price everyone was
paying.

He wondered where his 'Great God' could
be
To allow all this suffering from sea to sea.
He thought to himself, Will I be here
tomorrow?
Or will my death cause my mother great
sorrow?
Will God give me a chance to fulfill my
dreams?
And discard from my mind those horrible
screams.
Years' later as he stood at the Remem-
brance Day Service,
He recalled all these memories and
became very nervous,
Why was I spared while my many friends
died?
A tear trickled down from his misty blue
eye.
On November 11th we honour those who
fought
And thank them for the victory they
brought.
We lay a wreath beside their grave,
Oh, those fighters, they were so brave.
