A visit from Japan
Joan Black's grade 2 class at Lucknow
Central Public School is currently study-
ing Japan. As part of their studies they
have been fortunate in having Nao Mat-
suoka on hand to impart his knowledge on
Japanese Cooking. Nao has also shown the
students "slides of Japan; taught them
Origami, the art of paper folding; and
shown them a video on Suma wrestling.
Nao, a teacher in Japan, is in our area
thanks to the International Program. The
purpose of his internship is to observe our
educational system. His is living in
Wingham with Mr. Bill McKeon, an LCPS
teacher. While here Nao is based at
Wingham Public School and has been
visiting other Huron County schools. He
has been teaching Japanese and Abacus to
the grade 7 and 8 class at Wingham Public
School.- In Japan the Abacus is used with
"the same speed and efficiency as we obtain
from our calculators.
This is . Nao's first visit to North
America. His internship runs from April 88
to January 89, when he returns to Japan.
When asked for any comments about our
area, Nao stated "the people are very
friendly and everything is big; your coun-
try, houses, even your vegetables!"
