to be compensated
The majority of beef producers who sub-
mitted claims when the Brussels
stockyard defaulted irr payments will be
receiving compensation. .
"About 80 per cent of the claims submit-
ted to the Beef Financial Protection Fund
Board have been approved, and the che-
ques are in the mail today," Ontario
Minister of Agriculture and Food Jack
Riddell announced this week.
"I am pleased the board has been able to
move so quickly to resolve this situation,"
he said.
Total payment will be nearly $500,000.
There were approximately 100 claims,
totalling Less than $800,000.
The livestock community sale in
Brussels began to default on payments for
cattle from Ontario and western Canada in
late October. At that time, ministry in-
vestigators took claims from producers
who had not been paid.
Each claim, including those submitted
by 4-H members, was reviewed by
members of the protection fund board
earlier this week "on its own merits" and
payment should be reaching the producers
soon, financial protection unit ad-
ministrator Gill Shaw said.
The Beef Financial Protection Fund
Board, administered by the ministry, is
made up of beef industry representatives.
