HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-12-14, Page 8Page 8—Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, December 14, 1988 See you next fall when you take a trip Slips and falls account for fully 23 per cent of all reported lost time injuries. Most falls do not cause time off work, but end up in bruises, scrapes and stiff muscles. Others result in broken bones and long term pain and agony. This time of year is ripe for falls! Slip- pery, muddy ground, snow and ice, wet leaves and uneven surfaces are factors that need to be addressed in the prevention of falls. Wear proper footwear. It sounds like a basic rule, but how many pair of boots are worn after the tread is gone? Hopefully, we wouldn't drive a car with bald tires, and we should give the same consideration to our feet. Also, don't try to side step the realities of the season. There's no shame in Wearing proper footwear outside, then changing in- to indoor shoes later. Wearing smooth FBruce County OMAF IIMIIMI• leather soles is inviting an accident to happen. Keep the pathway clear. Inside or out- side, this is important. A good housekeep- ing practice is to put everything in its place - out of the way. Take special precau- tions around animal handling areas. Know how to fall. If possible, you should try to spread the impact of falling over as much an area of your body as you can. You don't want to land on an elbow, knee, or outstretched hand. Landing on a small part of your body can result in broken bones and often it's not the fall, but the lan- ding that will hurt you. ARM REPORT A pot luck dinner preceded the Christmas meeting of the Lucknow Presbyterian W.M.S. held at the manse December 7.. Mrs. Evelyn Little was in charge of the program, opening with scripture. Reflec- tions on the Advent season were given by Celia Aitchison, Dorothy Brown, Rhoda MacKenzie and Mildred Loree. Reports for the year were read and the same officers were returned for another year of service. Roll call was answered by 19 members with a Christmas thought. Nan'ies of shut-ins to be remembered at Christmas were drawn. Mrs. Ramsay closed the meeting with meditation while Rhoda presented a dos- . prayer. Slow down and look where you're going. `Tis the season to move quickly to get everything done. Take a minute to wipe off tractor, truck and combine steps. Walking on loose grain is like walking on marbles. Put a bag of salt or sand in your vehicles now. Carry a flashlight to light your way on unknown territory. Everything seems different in the dark. If there's something to hold onto, grab it! If you make the NO RIDER policy a rule, you'll never have to worry about your children falling off of machinery. Make your next TRIP somewhere ex- otic, not to the hospital emergency room! FEDERAL GRAIN STABILIZATION The federal government will pay more than $60 million under the Agricultural Stabilization Act for eastern grain crops marketed in 1987-88. • It was recently announced that support prices under the Act would be set at 100 per cent of the previous five-year average market price, adjusted for changes in the cash costs of production. This is above the minimum statutory level of 90 per cent. While all grains and oilseeds crops will be supported at the 100 per cent level, preliminary estimates show payments will be triggered only for grain corn, barley and canola. That would mean a total estimated pay- DOri't be left out mthecoid. You have until December 31 to open an Ontario Home Ownership Savings Plan (OHOSP) and still qualify for a 1988 OHOSP tax credit.
