Keep the Lord's Prayer
A United Church congregation in
Lucknow has formally requested that the
Huron County Board of Education keep the
Lord's Prayer in the classroom.
The Church's action came as a result of a
controversial court ruling which stated the
prominence of one prayer, such as the
Lord's Prayer, in schools, discriminates
against non-Christian students.
The Ontario Court of Appeal struck down
a section reading: "A public school. shall be
opened or closed each day with religious ex-
ercises consisting of the reading of the
Scriptures or other suitable readings and
the repeating of the Lord's Prayer or other
suitable prayers."
Respecting the spirit of the decision the
Ministry of Education has advised boards
that "any readings 'or prayers must reflect
the multicultural realities and traditions of
Ontario society, and one religion must not
be given a position of primacy."
The official board of the Lucknow United
Church asked that the HCBE consider the
church's opinion when making decisions
about opening exercises in Huron County.
"We strongly feel that this is an important
part of any student's life and should remain
as such," said Rod McDonagh, a member of
the church board, in a letter to the board.
The HCBE is awaiting guidance from the
Ministry of Education, and will soon be
receiving a listing of prayers from a variety
of religions used by the Toronto school
board.
No change
A request for a re-count in the close race
for the reeveship of Kinloss Township fail-
ed to show any change in the figures com-
piled after the election.
The race between incumbent reeve
Barry Johnston and challenger Jim Boyle
was indeed a close one with Johnston
registering 289 votes to Boyle's 284.
Following the re-count staged last Wednes-
day, those figures didn't change and Mr.
Johnston retained his position.
The re-count, just one of three required
in this area, was overseen by Susan
Stevenson, clerk -treasurer of the Village
of Ripley. In a municipal election, a re-
count is staged only at the request of one of
those seeking office.
