HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-11-30, Page 3Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, November 30, 1988—Page 3 Acting reeve needed for motion vote in Kinloss The Council of the Township of Kinloss met on November 7th at 7:30 pm in the Township municipal building. Present was Reeve Barry Johnston, all council members, the clerk and the road superintendant. The minutes of the meetings of October 3rd and 17th were adopted as read by the clerk. Mr. A.W. Clark of Maitland Engineering Services Ltd. was present in regard to any complaints that may have arisen concern- ing the Royal Oak Creek Extention 1988 and as no complaints were received, by- law number 14-1988 being a by-law to pro- vide for construction of the drainage works was given third reading and passed. The tender of Barry Weigel Drainage Ltd. was accepted to construct the Royal Oak Creek Extension 1988 for $11,364.00. The work is to be completed between June 1, 1989 and October 31, 1989. The general accounts for $36,254.03 and the road accounts for $33,707.37 were approved. On October 17th a building permit ap- plication was accepted for James Irwin to construct a machinery shed. A motion was passed that application be made to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications for an interim sub- sidy on 1988 expenditure. David Eadie was made acting Reeve in place of Barry Johnston for the passing of a motion in regard to applying to the Ministry of the Environment for funding concerning the Waste Management Im- provement Program due to a possible con- flict of interest. The Township may have to purchase some buffer land for the waste site and Reeve Barry Johnston has an in- terest in the land which may be acquired. A motion was then passed that applica- COUNCIL BRIEFS tion be made to the Ministry of the En- vironment for funding concerning the Waste Management Improvement Pro- gram in the amount of $44,500.00 which is to be used for capping the land fill, land purchase, leachage tests etc. Reeve Barry Johnston then returned to his normal seat. A reply is to be made to the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority that Kinloss does not agree with parts of the Kerrio Report pertaining to the reduction of membership and amalgamation of Con- servation Authorities. It is felt that any reduction in Conservation Authority membership should be initiated by the municipalities. A ratepayer's meeting was held on November 9th in the gym of the Township Municipal building. Clerk Frank Hawthorne chaired the meeting foi 'About sixty persons who attended. Each can- didate for office was asked in turn to say a few words after which there was a ques- tion period from the audience. The meeting closed about 10:00 pm. Signs discussed by Committee The regular monthly meeting of the Lucknow Tourism Committee was held November 21 in the Town Hall with Rick McArthur as chairperson: Following the reading of the October minutes, the group discussed erecting a road sign and a town directory sign. Many different ideas and suggestions were brought forward by the members in- cluding the lay -out of the sign, its size, advertising space, maintenance and location. It was decided that before a. v action is taken in this regard, more research should be done. November meeting of Lucknow W.I. The November meeting of the Lucknow Women's Institute was held on November 9. The hostesses were Jean Whitby and Noma Campbell. President Dorothy Brown presided and read a poem "I wear a poppy on Remem- brance Day". The business part of the meeting and correspondence were then conducted. Reports of the County Rally were given by Lois Goodhue and Mary MacGillvray delegates from our Institute. A number of war songs was played on piano by Kay McIntosh. Marion MacFarlane gave a reading which she composed about our local elec- tion. The motto "Are we better clothed than we were fifty years ago" was given by Noma Campbell. A demonstration of clothes and scarf ty- ing was given by Vicky Morrison. Charlene MacEwen was the model, and this was very informative and interesting. The meeting closed with the Queen. George Gibson was onhand at the meeting to represent the village council and was able to provid many worthwhile suggestions as to Waco representatives and government c,,ntacts should be ap- proached. Mr. Gibson also shed some light on the availability of grant money for such a project. It was decided at the meeting to have brochures printed and available for distribution in the area for the next tourist season. The purpose of the brochure will be to acquaint people with the services of- fered in the Lucknow area. It was pointed out that this brochure will bring much needed attention to the many hiking trails, fishing spots and various community events in this area. The Lucknow Tourism Committee is a group of community minded -individuals aiming at developing Lucknow and area as a tourist destination. Any one is welcomed' to attend the meetings and share their ideas. The next meeting of the committee will be held January 16, 1989. Help Celebrate.
