Mr. Paul Martindale, Director of the Bruce County Board of Education, was present and spoke briefly. Anne Wilson, first "vice-president of the Federation of Women Teachers" Associa- tions of Ontario presented an overview of issues presently facing the profession_ The membership issue, the role of legislation in the educational system, changing educa- tional philosophies which impact directly on students and the funding of education itself were topics addressed in her discus- sion with the membership_ The fall dinner meeting is always a special event for the teachers, as it is at this time that teachers new to teaching are inducted and teachers who retired during the previous school year are honoured_ The following new teachers were warmly welcomed into the association: Connie Forbes - K_T_T_P.S.; Kristina Maus - Elderslie; Jo Ann Scott - Lucknow; Ann Kingswell - Northport; and Madelene Robinson -Port Elgin Saugeen Central_ It was exciting to see so many new, eager teachers beginning their career. There was also much pleasure in honour- ing those newly retired teachers_ Retire- ment appears to be a time when new vistas and experiences unfold before persons not regulated by the 8:00 am. to 5:00 pm_ With a simple slip of the typewriter last week, we incorrectly urdentified some the the Lucknow students who became Ontario Scholars at F.E. Madil1's recent gradua- tion ceremony. Here for another look are, from left to right, Brian Reavie, Cathy Hamilton, Amy Pollard and Tony Gingrich. Good work folks_ routine of the working world. Looking quite happy and totally free of chalk dust and ditto fluid were Verna Sewers - Walkerton ; Alma Donaldson - Hillcrest; Marion Grant - Paisley; Isabelle Under- wood - Port Elgin-Saugeen Central; June Elliot - Elgin Market; and Mary Barron from Arran -Tara. Also retired but not pre- sent were Mari Young - Kincardine Twp. - Tiverton, and Bea Nixon from Wiartou. This year another group of women teachers was also honoured_ Sharon Ribey, Principal of Walkerton Public School, presented pins to women who had 30 years of teaching experience. This in- cluded: Aileen Wilkinson - Paisley P.S.; Vi Hill and Beatrice Nixon - Marton PS.; Alma Donaldson - Hillcrest PS.; Kathryn Campbell - Lucknow PS.; Jean Stewart and Jean Wark - G.C. Huston P.S.; and Eileen Morris - Kincardine Twp. - Tiverton P..S_ A special Distinguished Service Award was presented by Peggy -Jo Scott, Past - President of the local association, to Wan- da Alies of Chesley and Mona McLean of Bruce Twp. for 35 years experience in the teaching profession_ As women teachers, we strongly support the Women's House of Bruce County located in Kincardine, as they endeavour to provide a refuge to women and Children who are victims of a family crisis. Accor- dingly, ccordingly, Judy Whyte, Director of F_W.TAO_, presented a cheque to Judy Durst, Director of Women's House, for $350.00. Further, each school prepared a personal kit for a school aged child admit- ted to the Women's House_ Kits included personal hygiene items, books, puzzles, math equipment, art supplies, candies, mitts, small sports equipment - in fact a variety of items designed to fill a need and, let the child know we care. Separate School Board reaches a settlement The Huron -Perth County Roman Catholic Separate School Board and its teachers jointly announced that a settle- ment was reached on a two-year agree-• ment on November 2. Teachers ratified the agreement November 15 with trustees giv- ing their approval at the Board meeting on November 17. The previous contract expired August 31, 1988. The new contract gives teachers an average of 4.4% in the first year and a fur- ther 4.5% across the grid in year two. In addition, allowances for responsibility to principals, consultants, and coordinators have been improved in year 'one, with imit provements in allowances to vice - principals, department heads, and subject coordinators in year two_ Included in the settlement are im- provements in the benefit plans under semi -private hospital, dental insurance, and the introduction of vision care. These changes take effect January 1, 1989. Salary rates in year one of the contract range from a minimum of $20,750 in level D with no experience to $53,315 in the top category with 12 years experience. In the second year, these rates will become $21,685 and $55,715 respectively. Under the. new contract, the average salary in- creases from $39,046 in 1987-8810 $42,502 in 1989-90. County L.O.L. The County Loyal Orange Lodge . of Bruce C-207 held their annual meeting on Saturday, November 12 in the Kincardine Anglican Parish Hall. A large turn out saw members travel from Tara, Allenford, •Chesley, Southampton, Everett, Willowdale and Kincardine. Two Grand Lodge Officers were present for the gathering, Right Worshipful Brother Gordon McCracken, Grand Treasurer of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ontario West, and Right Worshipful Brother Lee Murphy of the Orange Insurance. This was an election year for the L.O.L. and the following members were elected: County Master, Angus MacLennan, Past Master, Lorne Emmerson; Deputy Master, Arthur McCormick; Junior Depu- ty, Norm Storwack; Secretary, Cecil Keith; Chalain, Chester Emmerton; Treasurer, Alfred Pratt. Also elected at the annual meeting were: First Lecturer, Jessie McIntosh; Second Lecturer, Earl Akin; Third Lecturer, Lorne Emmerson; Marshall, Gerald Schuler' Tyler, John Nelson; and Auditors, Frank Colwell, Irving Keyes and Chester Emmerton. All officers were installed by Right Wor- shipful Brother McCraken. Each officer spoke ands wished the County the very best. It was decided at the gathering to hold the semi -County meeting in Chesley in June. A committee was named for the an- nual church service next spring. It was also decided to hold the Royal Scarlet Chalpter meeting in Chelsey on April 10. The Grand Lodge Session will be staged in Kitchener. The meeting was closed by County. Master Bro. MacLennan.
