The NDP camp
At McQuail HQ
"Oh no, not again."
That was the reaction of Goderich resi-
dent Brian Petrie as he watched the Pro-
gressive Conservative party's overwhelm-
ing win from Huron -Bruce NDP head-
quarters Monday night.
About 35 NDP supporters and workers
crowded into the back room of the Little
Bowl Bowling Alley in Goderich to watch
the returns. NDP candidate Tony McQuail
and his wife Fran were there, offering
refreshments and answering a steady
stream of phone calls from NDP
scrutineers.
"My family has traditionally been Con-
servative for many years," Petrie said. He
supported the NDP because "I think Tony
McQuail can do the best job." He thought
the outcome of the election would be a
minority for the Conservatives, he said.
McQuail said the NDP would "continue
to do what we've been doing for the past
eight years continue organizing.
"Clearly, our support is rising," he said.
"But we need to do a better job of com-
municating between elections — we need to
build a better organization from the
ground up."
Among other things, they need to inform
the public of the lack of real differences
between the Liberals and the PC's, he said.
No real emphasis has been put on the fact
that John Turner, who came out so strong-
ly against free trade, got his campaign
funds from many of the same corporations
that supported Brian Mulroney.
The lack of such information is at least
partly the fault of the national media,
which don't do any sort of critical analyses
during elections, he added.
NDP supporters must look at each elec-
tion in terms of building support, he said.
Christian Heritage Party
The newest party in Huron -Bruce is the
Christian Heritage Party (CHP) which
finished in fourth spot with approximately
2,576 votes.
Although he finished in last place, can-
didate Tom Clark was not unhappy with
his results.
"I think we did as well as could be ex-
pected, being a new party," said Mr. Clark
in an interview on November 22. "We only
got started five weeks before the election."
Mr. Clark continued by saying, "You
always hope to do better, but compared to
the other CHP candidates in Canada, we
did quite well. I think we (Huron -Bruce)
finished in the top 10."
Mr. Clark credits his supporters and ex-
ecutive, as well as the media, for helping
him get as many votes as he did.
As for his future plans, Mr. Clark plans
on staying with the CHP.
"I believe (in what the party stands for )
quite strongly. If we (society) keep going
down hill as quickly in abortion and the
deficit ... we'll have a very heavy burden."
