Editorial assessment deemed "reassuring" by reader
To the Editor:
Your recent editorial assessment of the
Values and Morals Program of the Bruce
County Board of Education was reassuring
to those of us who played a part in its
development. In that regard, I would like
to identify Lloyd Ackert as the prime
mover in the process which developed. As
trustee for Lucknow and District, Lloyd
called a conference in 1978 to take a look at
education in Bruce.
Anyone in the county could attend and
over 300 persons did. Out of that con-
ference emerged the idea that the
undergirding premises of our educational
offering in Bruce should be discussed by
those most affected by it — students,
parents, teachers, and clergy. These con-
stituents provided the idea and concepts
upon which the program was built. Lloyd
Ackert believed that common ground
could be found and he was right.
As superintentent of schools at the time,
T. Keith Waldie also played a leading role,
as did a number of trustees and a resource
committee of parents, students and clergy.
Each school staff in the county provided
teachers who wrote curriculum
components.
The time has come for revision after 10
years of use. One major component, the
Opening Exercises, will be reviewed, and
once again, the consultation process will
occur. I am totally confident that consen-
sus can and will be reached. On a personal
note, I am pleased to be invited back from
retirement to assist with the review.
Thank you for the space to respond to your
editorial. -

To the editor:
I am writing in response to the question
of the Christian Heritage Party's stand on
the role of women. I feel the answer given
at the All Candidates meeting in Clinton
was incomplete. The C.H.P. affirms that
the role of women is equal. There are
many capable career women who have a
lot to offer in our society. There is also the
need for volunteers in all areas of social
services, schools, committees, etc....
Many of these essential volunteer services
are provided by women and many of them
are mothers. I feel the role of a mother
with young children is definitely in the
home with her children. Yet she still has
opportunities to give of her talents and
capabilities in other areas. Her children
will benefit from a mother who is active in
other facets of life.
I feel the government has a responsibili-
ty to give mothers the choice to stay at
home with their children. Who else is will-
ing to provide a warm, loving environment
which young children need? Who else is
motivated by the intensity of love and
pride to give unselfishly of their time and
energies? Motherhood is challenging, but
also very rewarding.
Will our society suffer when children are
., raised in a neutral, regulated setting such
as daycare? I say yes and I say govern-
ment has failed all loving, capable
mothers who are forced to find a job to sup-
plement their family income. Government
may not introduce legislation and tax
breaks that will make the choice for
mothers to stay at home virtually
impossible.
The C.H.P. is opposed to the state gover-
ning the raising of our preschool children.

To the editor:
The single most important educational
goal for almost any student in Canada, if
he/she is to have a chance of achieving
his/her goals in life, should be to master
the English language. English is now the
No. 1 language of the world. The French
language (proper or Parisienne) is very
much lower rated and, world-wide, it is
declining in use; French, as spoken in
Quebec, is a variant of proper French.
It seems a crime against English-
speaking students in Canada that they are
being coerced or forced to learn French in
'school rather than being able to concen-
trate on mastering the English language
/and grammar — a task sufficiently dif-
ficult that even few university graduates
an claim to have totally mastered. Just
o e reason that learning English and
F ch at the same time is particularly
diffi t for these students is that many
wo in French are similar yet different
in spelling, pronunciation, and/or meaning
to English words. The danger of not
mastering English first is that the student
may well end up being incompetent in both
languages.
My advice to English-speaking parents
is: Think long and hard before putting
your child into a French immersion pro-
gram; soon enough to learn French after
English has been mastered. To jeopardize
your child's chance of mastering the
number one language of the world in order
to gain limited fluency in a much lower
rated language makes no sense.

The Lucknow Business Association is
once again preparing for the busy
Christmas season ahead and president
Donna Sue Errington tells us this week
of a special event planned for Friday,
November 18.
On that date, the local merchants will
be putting up a huge Christmas tree at
the Lucknow Post Office and are in-
viting everyone in town to stop by and
lend a hand decorating. We expect to
hear the crisp, clear sounds of favorite
carols wafting across the village that
preparing
day.
Local shoppers will noticed the new
garlands being placed on village lights
this year and are reminded to watch for
the Christmas tree and poster contest
winners in the old Knetchel building
during the Business Association's an-
nual Christmas promotion.
Local businesses rely heavily on your
support during this busy time of year
and would like to take this opportunity
to thank you for shopping locally
