This testing is especially important because atrazine can carryover more than one year, and many variables affect the amount of carryover. Weather is one variable that affects the amount of breakdown of atrazine during the year. Breakdown is slower if dry weather per- sists, especially during the summer. A high pH soil, i.e. over 7.5 also slows the rate of breakdown. 90% Breakdown Under normal conditions, 90% of the atrazine applied hi a year will break down before spring of the next year. If, for ex- ample, we had applied one pound active atrazine last spring, carryover into next spring is 1/10 of a pound. 1988 Could Be Different Because of the drought this summer, atrazine breakdown may be slower than normal. Under normal conditions most of the atrazine breakdown takes place in the first 2% months after application. Between the fall and spring planting, breakdown continues to occur but at a much slower rate Mild and wet conditions • through winter gives increased breakdown. Because of the influence of weather, soil testing is important. By soil testing in the fall`, results are back early for planning next year's crop program. If the results of a test indicate it may be borderline for a crop other than corn, this field should be resampled early in the spring. Sampling in the fall should be done following plowing, if you plow. A minimum '/a lb. sample is re- quired. Cost of analysis is $20 through the Pesticide Residue Lab at the University of Guelph. Be sure to take a good represen- tative sample. A minimum of 15 soil cores from a 40 acre field should be taken. For help in interpreting the results, contact the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food office in Clinton at 482-3428 or 1-800-265-5170.
