The Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-10-26, Page 570 years ago October 24, 1918 Don't do your soldier out of a nice box of apples by neglecting to send his address to The Sentinel office. The Lucknow Fire Company have decided to send a box of ap- ples as a treat from home to every soldier who is overseas and who went from Lucknow, Kinloss, West Wawanosh and parts of Ashfield and Huron townships. All were delighted to learn at the end of last week that the fuel controllers of Canada and the United States had an- nounced that the situation regarding the supply of gasoline had so far improved that it was no longer necessary for automobile owners to refrain from using their cars on Sunday. Many, doubtless had planned to be out for trips several weeks delayed, but the weatherman stepped in and with gentle showers almost as affec- tionately as the controllers, persuaded folk to stay indoors. So there was another gasless Sunday. Acting on the principle that an "ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure" the Lucknow Board of Health, on Thursday of last week, ordered the school, the chur- ches and library closed until further notice, and also forbade the holding of public meetings of any kind, because of the influenza epidemic. Having finioshed our own plowing and some other contracts (175 acres in all) we are now at liberty to plow for others. We are operating two horse drawn, two fur- rowed, foot -lift, Cockshutt gangs with roll- ing coulters and narrow bottoms. Our work can be seen at either David Milne's or Phillip McMillan's. Terms - two dollars per acre for stubble, two fifty for sod, board and horse feed included. D.H.Mar- tin, Whitechurch. The only consola- tion is I filled this space once again. Writing a weekly column is no easy matter and to date I have not become rich and famous as editor Bundy referred to in his last column before leaving on his R R. In SENTINEL MEMOIRS vice rendered the church. That the Kinloss wolves have now spread their activities southward is in- dicated by attacks on sheep owned by Alex McLeod and Peter McKinnon on the se- cond concession. Numerous reports are heard of wild and tame raspberries being ripe again. 25 years ago October 30, 1963 The spring and summer like weather of the last month may be responsible for the unusual behaviour of a goose on the farm of Barrie Hackett. This goose hatched eight goslings last spring and to all ap- pearances, she is aiming at a repeat per- formance, During the last month she has laid 11 eggs, and on Monday of this week started nesting on them.
