And Canada's armed forces have the first new mandate in 16 years — "in the Trudeau-Turner years they couldn't even be bothered to give them a new mandate" — and the government's commitment to give them the tools to do the job right. The proposed nuclear -powered sub- marines, currently under criticism from the Liberal and NDP parties, will allow Canada to patrol the Arctic ocean for the first time, he said. The cost of the submarines will not cut into social programs, he said. "They will cost some $300 million over a period of 27 years. That's one-half of one per cent of what we'll spend on social pro- grams during that same period." Nor will they be armed with nuclear weapons. "They'll be conventionally armed," he said. "Nothing contravenes the Nuclear Non -Proliferation Treaty." He added, however, that major and significant.advances have also been made in arms control during Mulroney's time in office. "The prospect for peace is .better now than ever before," he said. Reinhardt Ltd: to install a screwed, col- oured, 26 gauge roof over the existing roof of the Kinloss Township municipal building for a tendered price of $32,985.54 plus R-40 insulation for $5,226.00. There were three contestants vying for the crown: Miss Laura Hallahan of R.R. 3 Blyth; Miss Marlene Albers of R.R. 2 Bluevale; and Miss Lisa Boonstoppel of R.R. 1 Auburn. Miss Marlene Albers was selected as Miss Congeniality. Marlene is the daughter of Peter and Helen Albers and is 17 years old. She attends F.E. Madill Secondary School in Wingham. The new 1988-1989 Huron County Dairy Princess is Miss Lisa Boonstoppel, daughter of Hans and Audrey Boonstoppel. Lisa is 19 years old and is in her second year of journalism at Humber College in Toronto. As the new Huron County Dairy Princess, Lisa will be available to promote milk and milk products throughout the County. Her role is to improve com- munications between the communing public and the milk and cream producers of her County.
