Mr. and Mrs. Michitara Ongawa, well
known on the Chatauqua platform, will
give the opening entertainment both after-
noon and evening October 29, 30 and 31 in
Lucknow, presenting an old Japanese play
The Mirror. Pitt Parker, the famous car-
toonist and clay modeller, will also
appear.
WANTED AT ONCE - Two girls for
finishing room at the Lucknow Table Fac-
tory. Steady work - good wages.
Big potatoes are not plentiful in this part
of the country this year. In fact with many
the crop has been pretty much a failure.
Because of this we were all the more sur-
prised when Mr. Robert Graham
presented at our office a big potato of the
Irjsh Cobbler variety which measures six
inches in length and four and one-half in-
ches across. Mr. Graham explained that
the big tuber had been sent to him by Mr.
Harry McCharles who has put in the sum-
mer in the Sudbury district where he
cultivated several acres of potatoes.
Pte Ewen MacQuaig sends a note of
thanks to the ladies of Lucknow for socks
recently received.
The Ontario Sunday School Association
will this month hold their 53rd annual con-
vention in Massey Hall, Toronto.
Lucknow students attending high school
and business college at Wingham all came
home on Wednesday, the schools having
been closed as a precaution against the
spread of Spanish influenza.

On Tuesday evening in Ashfield
Presbyterian Church, the congregation
gathered in large numbers to make a
presentation to their new pastor, Rev.
Reynolds Esler and his bride. Rev. and
Mrs. Esler were quietly married in Toron-
to on Monday, October 3. Mrs. Esler was
formerly Miss Marion Mason of Van-
couver. Mr. and Mrs. Esler have taken up
residence in the Ashfield manse.
Wm. Eadie of Holyrood has purchased a
new Massey -Harris 101 tractor and plough.
Gasoline dropped one cent a gallon at
local garages on Monday bringing the
price to 25 cents, which will be generally
popular with motorists and garagemen
alike, as that extra cent was a nuisance, to
say nothing of the additional cost during
the season's driving.
Fishing on Colpoy's Bay near Wiarton on
Saturday, Fraser Paterson landed a ten
pound trout. "In the party were
A.W.Hamilton, Jack MacDonald, Jack
McQuaig and Fraser.

Wayne Farrish, son of Mr. and Mrs.
Jack Farrish of Lucknow, has his right
arm in a cast after taking a tumble from
his bicycle.
Murray Gaunt of West Wawanosh
Township officially became the Liberal
member of parliament for the provincial
riding of Huron -Bruce following the of-
ficial count made by the returing officer.
The cliffhanger indecision is unique in the
past half century but there were other
close ones in the Huron area. In one elec-
tion the verdict was decided by the return-
ing officer's vote and in another one, there
was a two -vote difference.
A full attendance of the members of the
Lucknow Business Men's Association is re-
quested next Tuesday evening at Cowan's
Restaurant. This is a reorganization and
Christmas planning meeting.
Elwin Hall of Lucknow District High
School has been elected president of the
local branch of the Ontario Secondary
School Teachers' Federation. Other
Lucknow teachers who attended the
meeting were L.E.Goyette, Don Dennis,
Thomas Pettit, C. Lewis, R.Dowsett and
Mrs. Thomas McKenzie.
A hot turkey supper is being served at
Lucknow United Church. Price is $1.50 for
adults; 75 cents for public school children.

October 18, 1978
The Lucknow and District Kinsmen and
Kinette Clubs have combined efforts to
donate $5,000 to the Lucknow and District
Community Centre Building Fund. The
money was raised at the Kin Summerfest
this past summer.
Tenders were opened for the job of
village snow removal. The, tender of Bill
Nelson was accepted. Nelson was hired at
the rate of $25 per hour for tractor and
blower and $18 per hour for trucks.
Hackett Farm Equipment of Lucknow
started construction this week of a new
building to house their Allis-Chalmers
farm implement dealership on Huron
County Road 1.
The Dungannon Willing Workers
Walkathon on Saturday had 49 walkers
participating. The youngest to complete
the 10 -mile course was four year old Tanya
Hodges.
Marie Coiling, RR 4 Ripley, was the win-
ner of last week's Lucknow Community
Centre draw.
