$450,000 helps keepdream alive
"We're dancing on our desks!" said
Katherine Kaszas, Blyth Festival Artistic
Director. "With the contribution of
$450,000 announced by Murray Cardiff,
MP -Huron through the federal Depart-
ment of Communications Cultural In-
itiatives Program, we will be able to begin
construction and enter into Stage I of our
renovations.
"The overwhelming support of our com-
munity in terms of letters of endorsement
as well as financial contributions has been
echoed by the federal government. "In
less than two months, over $236,000 has
been raised from hundreds of individuals
for our Festival's building capital cam-
paign. I want to thank Murray Cardiff for
his dedication to cultural activities in this
area and his outstanding support of the
Blyth Festival since its inception nearly
fifteen years ago. He and his staff have
worked diligently on behalf of this
project."
The Capital Campaign exploded into ac-
tion just this summer, striving to raise $1.8
million dollars to build, renovate and
refurbish the theatre's backstage and
front -of -house facilities. The first stage of
the building campaign will include major
improvements to the production area
workshops; rehearsal space where
workshops, Young Company and Festival
rehearsals take place; and changes to the
building which houses administration
offices.
Future Blyth Memorial Hall im-
provements include padded seating and
more washrooms for our patrons, a larger
box office and an elevator for our disabled
patrons. The fin ages of the building
project will t plac s soon as the re-
mainder of t total $1.8 million dollar

campaign funds are raised. It may be one
more summer for the famous Blyth
theatre hard seats!
"This project is extremely important in
maintaining our Festival's position as a
leading force in indigenous theatre in this
country", said Sheila Richards, one of the
many Board members who have helped to
guide this project.
"The timing of this announcement is
very critical to our construction schedule.
Our $1.8 million goal is only a million
dollars away and we expect the provincial
government will be announcing its con-
tribution to this project shortly, as well as
the many corporations and Foundations
we have approached", said Joel Harris,
Blyth Festival's General Manager.
The announcement of the federal
government's committment to the project
came on the evening of the Festival's
"Murder Mystery Dinner" fund-raising
event which was written especially for the
Blyth Festival by Colleen Curran. "More
than one mystery was unveiled tonight",
said Board President and Co-ordinator of
the evening, Marian Doucette.
Looking back at its fourteen year
history, the Blyth Festival has excelled in
production standards, developed a
remarkable record of discovering and
presenting new Canadian plays (43
premieres) and presented innovative
young people's programmes. Its produc-
tion of Bordertown Cafe is currently on
tour throughout Ontario with future per-.
formances in Port Dover, Guelph,
Chatham, Petrolia, Toronto, Barrie,
Peterborough, Perth, Blind River,
Kapuskasing and ending in Gravenhurst
on November l9th.

Just before the Blyth Festival's first capital fundraiser, a murder mystery theatre and
dinner recently, Huron -Bruce MP Murray Cardiff was on hand to announce a $450,000
grant towards the regional theatre's expansion. The money, announced the same day as
the federal election call, comes from a Cultural Initiatives Program grant through the
Department of Communications. Here, board member Sheila Richards, who is also the
past president, hugs the MP moments after the funding was announced. (photo by Bill
