Testing for "pretty poison" in some pottery
Once a little known and little understood
problem, the danger of lead leaching from
glazes of earthenware pottery has recently
drawn attention in North America.
Another previously unrecognized danger
that has come to„light recently involves the
old practice of using leaded paints under,
glazes on pottery, glass and dinnerware.
When the clear glaze breaks down due to
washing, lead in dangerous amounts can
seep from the paints.
In Canada, the Ministry of Consumer
and Corporate Affairs (Product Safety
Branch) has no standards for the regula-
tions or use of leaded paints on pottery, so
it is not known whether, or how widely,
such paints might be used in Canada
today.
One recently documented case of poison-
ing from glazed paint involves a Seattle
couple (U.S.) who were poisoned by lead
from the paint on a set of cocktail glasses.
Their problems became so severe that doc-
Kids need Big Brother
,The majority of Canadian boys grow up
with two parents to guide them and help
them develop into responsible well -
adjusted adults. But there are some 400,000
boys in Canada today who have no father
present. Their father may be deceased, or
living apart from them. Some boys have
never even known their fathers.
These boys need a man in their lives, a
person who can share their problems and
their joys, give advice, and develop their
interests.
A Little Brother is a boy between the
ages of six and 16 who has no father at
home or consistent male image outside the
home. He may be having trouble adjusting
to life, or may just be a boy in need of a
special friend.
A Big Brother is a man over the age of 18
who may be from any walk of life. He may
or may not have children of his own. He
volunteers to give some of his time to
befriend a boy. It may only be a few hours
a week, but it could dramatically affect the
boy's life.
Big Brother volunteers are carefully in-
terviewed, and a thorough inquiry is done
to ensure that they are of sound character,
suited to the responsibilities of being Big
Brothers.
The Big and Little Brothers are "match-
ed” according to personality types, in-
terests, background and goals.

Everyone Welcome
The program emphasis is friendship and

"Share a moment that'll last a lifetime."

tors unnecessarily removed the man's gall
bladder before a correct diagnosis of lead
poisoning was made. Also, a child died in
Montreal after drinking apple juice from
an earthenware•jug.
In the face of what appears to be a grow-
ing problem, however, one.recent develop-
ment is heartening. For consumers who
wish to save the expense of having their
suspect items checked at a commercial
laboratory (at a cost of over $30.00 each), a
simple home test kit is available. The kit is
simple to use and will test over 60 items.
The Ministry of Consumer and Corporate
Affairs has tested the kit and concluded
the following: "the kit is effective for con-
sumers to use for the detection of lead in
ceramic ware...excellent to use as a pre-
screen for a potentially hazardous
situation... "
If you suspect your dishes may be
poisonous, you can buy an inexpensive kit
to test them at home. For more informa-
tion, write to: ABOTEX ENTERPRISES
