Local dogs
will walk
On Sunday, October 2, Lucknow will
mark its participation in the 4th National
Walk-A-Dog-A-Thon. Nationally, Cana-
dians and their dogs will be walking 10 km
to raise funds to provide free dog guides to
qualified blind and visually impaired
Canadians.
Lucknow will participate with the
Wingham folk and the walk begins at 1:30
at Wingham Riverside Park. Registration
is a half hour before the event begins.
Sponsor forms are available from the
Bank of Montreal, Lucknow or call John
Pollard at 528-3026. Everyone with their
dog is _welcome to participate in this fun -
filled event.
Local canines particpating are "Jake"
Becker, "Geddy" Pollard, "Taylor"
Agnew, and "Benji" Shepherd. Of course,
these dedicated animals will bring along
their owners to participate as well. Susan
Wyndham and her dog will also join in the
walk (at press time we had been unable to
contact Susan as to the name of her pet).
With 53,000 registered blind Canadians
many could lead a more mobile, indepen-
dent style of life with a trained dog guide,
Last year Canadians and their dogs raised
$220,000 and this year Canine Vision has
set their sights on $550,000.
Canine Vision Canada is a non-profit
organization that was founded by the Lions
Foundation of Canada. It is supported by
private and corporate donations. National
sponsors for the Walk-a-dog-a-thon are
Ralston Purina Inc., Lions Foundation of,
Canada and the Bank of Montreal.
If you are unable to bring along your
"best friend" to participate in this very
worthwhile project, why not call one of our
local walkers and offer them a pledge.
The work at the Lucknow Sports Com-
plex got a little expert help with decorating
recently as local artist Robert Skipper, of
Lanesville, stopped by to paint the mural
which now adourns the front entrance.
Recreation Director, Bill Hunter, who ap-
parently posed for the painting, reports
that work at the arena complex is pro-
gressing nicely and expects to have the ice
made by mid-October. (Rob Bundy photo)
