The time of year has arrived that I have learned to dread. It comes semi-annually, spring and fall; my search for comfortable and stylish attire to cover my lower ex- tremities ( otherwise known as feet, although mine have been called less kindly names. such as pontoons or skis). I have been plagued by this problem for as long as I can remember. I recall my Mom buying me a new pair of skates when AMBLINGS by Pat Livingston dating me?) but I figured with new skates I was about 12. I was so proud of them - un-' til I hit the ice. Now I was never of the calibre of Barbara Ann Scott (is that Excellent response to Arthritis Campaign To The Editor: The residents of Nile, St. Augustine, Dungannon and rural areas donated generously towards the recent Arthritis Campaign. I would be able to gracefully cover the sur- face of the ice, if only going in the forward direction. You've heard of the saying "all feet". I was "all skates". Those shining white, monstrous pieces of equipment appeared to precede the rest of my body around the arena; and those picks - they were out to get me, as I spent a considerable amount of time picking myself up off the ice. I still have the skates. The only problem being my appendage don't quiet fit in, due to the fact I am unable to bend my toe back under my foot. It appears to me that the manufacturers in the last few years have started making footwear smaller. When one reaches a size 10, you are praying your feet have stopped growing. Believe me, purchasing a pair of size 10's would be easy compared to the headaches I go through trying to find my size. It has really irked me over the years when I would walk into a shoe store and ask for my size and receive either of the following: 1. "Did you say size ? I'm sorry we don't carry them that large!"; 2. A salesperson doing his/her best not to roll on the floor laughing; 3. "Yes, I'm sure we can help you." Then they trot out an array in my size, but suitable only for wearing in the barn. Why do some manufacturers believe that if a person has long feet they should always be wide feet and that you probably look like a cow and don't care what style of footwear you adorn your feet with! A few years ago I finally found a shop in Wanted dart players Calling All Youth Lucknow Legion Branch 309 is in the pro- cess of forming a Youth Dart League. This dart league will be for interested youths, boys or girls, in the 12 through 18 year category. Start practicing and watch this paper for full details in the very near future. the city that carried size 4 -12, quad A to E. I flipped out! Finally here was a place I could purchase feminine, stylish shoes. I found a style that fit and felt divine. NOW, thanks to fashion trends, it is becoming dif- ficult to find this style. Another bee in my bonnet regarding this footwear problem is the price I have to pay for one pair of shoes. When my friend and I go shopping for shoes, she buys three pair for the same price I pay for one. I am unable to keep a large selection of colours in my closet. I stick to the basics at those prices. Shoe salespeople now suggest I do my buying for summer shoes in January and February; winter shoes in July and August. Give me a break ! I'm not that organized. Who's worried about summer shoes in January or February when we are slopping about in slush and snow? In July and August, the last thing I want to think about is purchasing boots - that's a very unwelcome reminder of all that white fallout we are burdened with. Having long feet is also a curse to pan- tyhose. The big toe, peeping out of an open - toed shoe always makes contact first with any protruding objects. Besides looking ridiculous, it is very uncomfortable with one toe sticking through. Friends and family, kind as always, have made two brilliant suggestion to com- bat my foot problem: have part of my toe surgically removed - some have even of- fered to help in this procedure; buy the shoe boxes and leave the shoes in the store. Wise people aren't they? While I don't relish the thought of losing part of my toes, I have considered the cz possibility of wearing the boxes. A few magic markers and the possibilities are endless. I haven't figured out yet how to waterproof the boxes or keep them on my feet. The only consolation I have is: people with big feet are reported to have a very good understanding of others and a good hold on the world. I haven't decided what having a good hold on the world means or just how important it is. And to all of you out there whose feet are short, narrow, flat or fat, cursed with bu- nions, corns or callous my sympathy. Have a good week and take care of your feet!
