You find friends when door refuses to open
By Pat Livingston
It was Wednesday morning, and as
usual, I was scurrying around to get to
work early to deliver the bundles of papers
to the local stores and still manage to have
coffee with the Super Scoop coffee club,
before opening the office.
Park the car, dash to the door, insert the
key - nothing happens. Oh, mustn't have
the key in properly; try again - still
nothing happening. At this point panic
starts in the bottom of my stomach and
within minutes the pulse is racing and my
mind doing overtime. Here I am on the
wrong side of the door with no way to get
in. Run get the WD 40 that fixes
everything, or so I thought! Didn't work
Ramblings of the GM
this time.
Number one son, who is waiting to take
the car to school, gives the lock a try and
fiddles around. Still nothing.
Son takes the car and boogies off to
school. I run to the Super Scoop and loudly
approach my friends who are having cof-
fee. Help! I can't get in the office. Doug
Clark suggests he will try with the key. I
couldn't print here what I had in mind in
doing with the key by this time.
A phone call to a friend suggests that I
see if Bob Struthers, who was working
across the street from our office, would
come over and see what the problem was.
Race down the street again, after gulping
a mouthful or two of coffee and getting
conned into flipping - I'm sure they thought
I would lose due to my flustered condition.
Thank goodness for thoughtful people in
a small town. After explaining my
predicament to Bob, he grabbed a few
tools he thought might be useful and across
the street we go. Now, the way my luck
goes sometimes, I was sure that Bob would
insert the key, turn it and the door would
open. Not so!
As time goes by and Bob, having no suc-
cess at getting the' lock to work, starts to
look at a window he may have to remove.
He gives the key another try and finally
the lock turns. Well at least I am in the
office.
Bob proceeds to take the lock apart and
investigate, discovers the problem and in-
serts a new mechanism in the locking
area. (I'm sure there is a proper name for
this, butnot being too knowledgeable in
this are, I'll leave it a mechanism.)
The panic feeling subsides and the
regular Wednesday morning routine
begins, only one hour late!
A great big thank you to Doug who tried
to help me out, to George A. for his
assistance in delivering a bundle of papers
for me and especially to Bob who dropped
everything and came to my rescue.
The best part of the morning was 1 didn't
lose the flip for coffee!
Are principles of freedom being threatened?
Dear Rob,
I am sorry to have to write this letter but
I feel that the principle of political freedom
is an important one in a democracy. I'll
give you a little background so that you
may judge whether this principle is
threatened by recent actions of the
Lucknow Agricultural Society Board.
Over the years I ahve watched Liberals
and Tories waving from their cars in the
Fall Fair parade. As a New Democrat I
have thought it would be a good idea to also
enter a float in the parade so that we too
would be a part of this community event.
Locally the New Democratic Party has
grown and this year we felt up to sponsor-
ing a float in a number of fall fair parades.
I wrote to various fairs about entering a
horse drawn float.
On August 20 we took our float in the
Dungannon fall fair parade. The float is a
hay wagon pulled by a team of Belgian
work horses and decorated with crepe
paper, posters of Ed Broadbent and
"Canada -Don't Trade it Away" signs. We
give out information and candy along the
parade route. The secretary and president
of the Lucknow Agricultural Society were
THE EDITOR
at the Dungannon Fair and saw the float.
On August 23 the Lucknow Agricultural
Society passes a motion "that a letter be
sent telling Tony where to registerand
that all floats refrain from religious or
political advertising".
On September first I received a letter
advising me of where to register and "that
no float should promote religious or
political advertising". I was surprised,
disappointed and somewhat angered at
what felt like a politically motivated effort
to suppress our float.
I phoned the secretary on September 2 to
ask some questions about the motion. The.
secretary refused to tell me who had mov-
ed and seconded the motion. He suggested
that if I wanted a copy of the minutes I
should request them in writing, which I
did. He did inform me that they did not ex-
pect their motion to affect any existing en-
trants in the parade.
On September 3 we took our float to Kin-
cardine where we had a nice time in the
parade. Our kids tossed out 15 lbs of candy.
We gave out lots of information, waved at
lots of smiling people and were invited
back for next year.
On September 6 I stopped by the home of
the secretary to see if the minutes were
ready. They weren't. I indicated a desire
to speak to the Agricultural Society Board
that evening to them to reconsider their
decision and was given a time. I arrived at
9:40, received a copy of the minutes and
was given an opportunity to address the
Board. I explained why I felt that their ac-
tion was inappropriate and asked them to
reconsider it. As soon as' I finished speak-
ing I was advised by the President that
prior to my arrival he had checked with
the mover and seconder, they- were not
prepared to reconsider the matter and that
was it.
In writing this letter I am not wanting to
attack anyone. I have been a member of
the Lucknow Agricultural Society for
years, have helped at the fall fair and have
worked with many of the members of the
Board as neighbours and friends. But I do
think a mistake has been made and I think
it is on a matter of real importance in a
free and democratic society.
I believe it would be a mistake to outlaw
politicians and political expression from
the floats in the fall fair parades. The
parade is an opportunity for a variety of
civic groups to advertise their existance
and participate in a community event.
However, if the Lucknow Agricultural
Society feels that this is not appropriate it
should have included this in the Fall Fair
Book Rules. It should also enforce it fairly
and prevent Liberal and Tory MP's and
MPP's from using the fair as an opportuni-
ty to advertise themselves.
However, I believe a worse mistake is
being made in that the Agricultural Socie-
ty appears to be trying to suppress the ap-
pearance of a specific political party float.
The Liberals had a Jack Riddell float in
the Dungannon fair parade last year which
apparently; did not cause the Society to
create new rules. Yet 3 days after New
Democrats appear at Dungannon the
Agricultural Society is hastily passing a
motion to prevent us from appearing in
Lucknow.
I know that Liberals and Tories have
