A recent survey indicates that Cana-
dians need to be more aware of their risk
of heart disease and stroke. These diseases
kill 80,000 people each year in Canada;
that's more than all other diseases com-
bined. But people feel that cancer is a
greater threat to their lives than heart
disease.
In a survey of 1,005 Ontario residents,
people were asked to rate their concern
about a number of diseases. On a 10 -point
scale (with 10 the highest level of con-
cern), cancer received a rating of 8.5, with
heart disease following at 8.2. People wor-
ried considerably less about the next four
— diabetes, arthritis, kidney diseases and
Alzheimer's disease — rating them from
6.6 to 6.0.
Although no group put heart disease and
stroke in first place where it belongs,
awareness of the real threat posed by
these diseases increased with the age of
the respondent. Those over the age of 50
were most concerned about car-
diovascular disease. French speaking
respondents were considerably more
aware of the real dangers of heart disease
than English-speaking Canadians.
Dr. Anthony F. Graham, President of
the Heart and Stroke Foundation of On-
tario, said, "Advances in research and
file needed
education have led to a remarkable reduc-
tion in, the death rate from heart disease
and stroke. In the past 30 years, deaths
from these diseases have dropped by 36
per cent.
"Even so, heart disease and stroke are
still the leading killers of Canadians."
