Fair results from Dungannon's 129th annual
With attendance down at the 129th an-
nual Dungannon Fair last weekend
(August 19-20), fewer participants were in-
volved in the various events and contests.
A wide variety of competitions, shows and
activities attracted some energetic con-
tributions however.
Friday evening, August 19, the events'
began with the children's pet parade. Win-
ners from the different classes were :
Tyler Tigert, Amy Jo Glenn, Tammy
Pengelly and Brenda Nivins.
The chainsawing competition, also held
Friday night, attracted approximately 10
contestants. Winners in each class were:
John Merrill (Occ to 35cc, 36cc to 51cc, 52cc
to 65cc, 80cc to 99cc) and Jim Maan (66cc
to 79cc). Winner of the open, and also the
overall winner was John Merrill.
Balethrowing, a contest in which
fairgoers show their skill at throwing bales
of hay, was held Friday night as well. Win-
ners were: Dwayne Rivett (men's divi-
sion), Lisa Chaput (ladies' division), Tim
McNee (youth), and Mark Kerr
(children's class).
Friday night's events also, included an
armwrestling competition, won by Bill
Curran (under 120.pounds), Marty Hesch
(121-150 lbs.), Tom Johnston (151-180 lbs.),
and Dwayne Rivett (181 lbs. and over).
Rivett also won in the open division. Dawn
Tucker won in the ladies' division (121-150
lbs.) and also in the open.
Saturday's events began with the
parade.
Entrants were judged in various
classes: most humourous float - entered by
Dennis Park, Andrew Glenn, Tim McNee
and Joel Wright; miscellaneous - Brian
Olson; school entry - Brookside; best
dressed preschool rider and vehicle -
Jason Pentland; best preschool costume -
Adam Smyth; best dressed elementary
school rider and vehicle - Sarah Taylor and
Maribeth Dawson; best elementary school
costume - Jane Smyth; best organization
or club entry - Goderich Lions Club; best
vintage vehicle - Harold McGee; pony and
cart, pony and rider - Diane Drennan.
Barbara Nivins won the Scarecrow com-
petition, and Bob Wilkins took the prize -in
the Handymancontest with his multi-
purpose utility belt.
Names were not available for winners in
the horseshoe pitching competition,
although officials say there was a good tur-
nout. Teams came from as far as London
to participate.
The baby contest was held Saturday
afternoon, for entrants under one -year-old.
Winners came under one of three
categories.
For babies under four -months, Melissa
Wilkins (daughter of Bob and Joanne of
Dungannon) took first place. Second prize
was one by Justin Miller (son of Jack and
Judy of Dungannon), and Samantha Bell-
inger took third place (daughter of
Theresa and Paul of RRI Dungannon).
Winners in the four to eight-month
category were: first place - Carly Fisher
(daughter of Brenda and Greg Fisher of
Dungannon), second place - Phillip
Johnston (son of Patti and Gary Johnston
of Goderich), and third place - Justin
Smith (son of Jim and Mary of
Dungannon).
In the final category for babies between
eight and twelve -months, winners (in
order of first to third place) were: Laura •
Bere (daughter of David and Dorothy of
Dungannon), Patrick Miltenberg (son of
Jennifer and Don of RR1 Lucknow) and
Blake McMillan (son of Kathy and Kirk of
Gorrie ).
The only entrants in the twin class were
Ricky and Jessie Ulch, the three -month-
old sons of Shelly and Ray Ulch of
"Dungannon.
The remote control car contest was new
this year. Jeff Brindley, 12, of Dunghnnon,
won in the 4x4 class, while Mike Huber, 15,
of Goderich, won in the car class.
The children's bicycle races were divid-
ed into three categories. For children
seven -years and under, two prizes were
awarded: first - Melissa Faber, and se-
cond - Sherry Faber. Children eight to
12 -years had three winners: first - Chris
Maize, second - Rob Ohm, and third - Den-
nis Black. Winners in the 13 -years and over
class were: first - Joel Wright, second -
Brian Olson, and third - Chris Humphrey.
In the open half -mile run, Dennis Park
took first place, Joel Wright took second,
and Chris Humphrey reached the finish
line in third place.
Overall champions in the draught horse
competition were Don and Dawn Sowerby
of RR4 Goderich.
New this year, the open dairy and beef
invitational calf show was a popular event.
Heather Alton had the champion dairy
heifer, and Vanessa Alton entered the
champion beef calf.
In the field crop competition, there was a
tie between Gary and Joanne Sproul and
family, and Bill McWhinney.
Overall winners in the -hon ecraft section
were: sewing - Kathy Gutmanis; quilts -
Peg Purdon (made the champion quilt);
Christmas corner - Helen Nicholson; and
photography - Violet Brindley.
The culinary art winner in both the bak-
ing and preserves categories was
Margaret Errington.
Overall horticulture winner was Helen
Nicholson.
Prize-winning vegetables were entered
by Nancy Rivett in the adult class, and
there was a tie between Jason and Jac-
queline Pentland in the junior class.
Brad Hodges took the prize in beginner
homemaking and Jodie Riley won for
junior homemaking. There was a tie bet-
ween Brenda Nivins and Barb Nivins in
the teen homemaking division.
