—You can't take fitness lying down --
Due to increasing interest in fitness pro-
gram the Lucknow Recreation Depart-
ment is introducing a fall session of fitness
classes. They are introducing Diane
Phillips (McBride) as your instructor. She
is replacing Helen Maclntyre who is school
bound.
Diane is fully qualified as a fitness in-
structor and will endeavor to expand our
fitness programs.
We regret the multi purpose recreation
room with its shock absorbing floor in the
new Sports Complex will not be opera-
tional for the beginning of this session but
we are seeking permission to hold classes
in the Lucknow Central Public School.
There are many reasons for wanting to
become more fit. Many figure -conscious
women will see it as a way to lose or con-
trol weight. Others may see it as an oppor-
tunity to get out of the house. Fitness can
benefit us at all ages.
Exercise can aid in the control of weight
by expending calories. Weight loss occurs
in two ways when exercise and controlled
eating habits are put into place. This think-
ing is a much healthier way to take off
weight and keep it off than crash dieting.
Perhaps your weight is just fine but you
are not happy with the appearance of your
thighs, for example. Exercise, much less
expensive than extreme medical techni-
ques such as liposuction, can be beneficial
by toning the ham strings and quadraceps.
This would give you a more balanced ap-
pearance. The same goes on other body
parts - buttocks, hips and chest areas all
can benefit from consistent exercise. This
is not to say that we can all plan to look like
Bridgette Neilson, (exercise class does not
increase height!) but that we can work
towards looking our absolute personal
best.
As time flies by all the more quickly, our
metabolic rate does just 'the opposite,
which brings us to the next benefit of exer-
cise. Our metabolic rate slows down with
age which means that our calorie re-
quirements ,lessen, causing pounds to add
on if lifestyle habits are not changed. 13y
increasing physical activity, we can

counteract some effects of aging and our
love of food.
Older adults would do well to participate
in an exercise program. Besides aiding in
weight control, regular exercise can con-
tribute to strengthening the heart, increas-
ing capacity, muscle strength and joint
flexibility. All of these benefits of exercise
can assist you in remaining self-sufficient.
Another component of aging which has
circulated in the media of late is
osteoporosis or bone deterioration.
Physical activity has been shown to ac-
tually decrease the rate of osteoporosis. If
there is a history of this in your family,
fitness is for you. It can help.
There are so many benefits of exercise
that it is hard to understand why we don't.
We are too busy, we get enough of a
workout running after our children, we'll
all feel silly jumping around in a room -
whatever your excuse - reconsider it. We
cannot be busy if we are not fit and able.
Exercise can actually make you feel more
energetic. Ask your friends who are taking
Aquafit this summer. As for feeling silly -
after your first class we hope everyone will
feel at ease. The only downside to exercise
is that for us to obtain any of these
benefits, we must participate a minimum
of three times weekly.
But that's not so bad - we plan to make
this program interesting, varied and en-
joyable for everyone.
To find out what class best suits you and
your aspirations, select one below. If you
have any concerns about starting a fitness
program, consult your physician.
Stretch and Tone: A gentle exercise
class, 35 minutes long. It is ideal for those
with knee or back problems, older adults,
and those looking to get into a fitness
routine. Exercises taught increase flex-
ibility in joints and tone muscles. How
about it - can your thighs use it? Par-
ticipate two times a week on Monday and
Thursday evenings at 6:15 p.m. for max-
imum benefit.
Activation: This will be a high energy
workout for those with an eye on the
bathroom scale! It will include 15-20
minutes of cardiovascular work which
strengthens the heart muscle, while burn-
ing calories. Specific muscle groups will
be worked for overall toning benefit during
this 45 minute class, held at 7:00 p.m. on
Monday and Thursday.
The eight week session is to begin Mon-
day, September 12. Cost is $25.00. We en-
courage women of Lucknow and area to
come out, socialize and benefit your body!
