HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-08-24, Page 7Reading Club finale A record number of elementary students from the Lucknow area participated in this year's Lucknow Library's Summer Reading Club. According to Fran McQuail, Library supervisor, fortyof the forty-five children registered completed the program. "We're very pleased so many children and families are finding the library a good source of recreation during the summer months," she said. This year was the fourth year the Library has run a Summer Reading Pro- gram for children grades 1 through 8. This year's theme was "DINOSAUR DIG IN" and as the readers completed their books they jumped forward step by step on the tracking poster to finally catch the dinosaur when they had completed the club's requirements. Each child was re- quired to read 5 books by Canadian authors and older children made a poster about a book or wrote their own story. Dinosaur trivia questions could be resear- ched each week as well. Wednesday evening, August 17th, was the ' awards party. Seventy children, friends and parents, gathered to watch the movies and receive their awards. Each child received their Digger's Diploma with a star for every year they had participated in the program. T THE LIBRARY Hackett, Ryan Hackett, Julie Gollan, Lisa Gollan, Shelly Gollan, Daniella Fischer, Sean Lougheed, Jake Miltenburg, Rachel McQuail, Caley Moore, Dillon Moore, Shane Petteplace, Fiona Mowbray, An- drew Mowbray, Lynn Jackson, Taylor Mali, Heather Robinson, Patricia Robin- ,, son, Claire Weir, and Mark Weir. Children who had made posters also got Dinosaur stickers and the story writers got Information Pins. Special mention was made of the readers who vied for the Most Books Read prize. Murray Gertsma won the dinosaur poster for his total of 31 books. Caley Moore had 23; Tom Gertsma, 17; Lynn Jackson, 14; Ryan Hackett, 13; Amy Blake, 12. After the awards were presented everyone enjoyed the goodies from the Dinosaur Bait table which were provided by the participants and their families. Fran McQuail asked the students to leave their book posters for display in the library so everyone could enjoy them. Upcoming programs this fall at the library include Prechool Story Hour for 3-5 yr. olds at 10:30 am Friday mornings star- ting September 9th. On Bruce County school PD days the Library will be hosting "MOVIE MADNESS", film shows for public school children. Watch for dates and times posted at the school and Library. Summer winds down The Talk of the Town ' As summer holidays begin to wind down, we stop and think of all the things that we had planned to accomplish in the past two months and wonder where the time went. Fraser and Catherine Ashton, Antoine and Stefanie of Aylmer, Quebec visited the, past two weeks at Amberley Beach with Eileen Ashton, Don and Bev Thompson and family. Congratulations to Charlene Elphick and Ronnie Carrick who were married in the Lt(cknow Presbyterian Church St., Aug. 20th. Sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Robert Purves of Highway 86 E. who passed away in the Wingham Hospital last week. Among those attending his funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Gorge Mid- dlton, Mr. and Mrs. Jim Morrison, and Mr. Archie Graham of London. Others attend- ed from London, Kitchener, Toronto, Hunt- sville, Southampton, Goderich, Kincar- dine, Ripley, Walkerton, Neustadt, For- mosa, Teeswater, Wingham and surroun- uCKNow by Mildred Loree ding areas. Susan Thompson of Kitchener and Nan- cy Thompson of London recently vacation- ed for a week at the Thompson cottage at Amberley Beach. Austin and Mildred Loree spent a very enjoyable weekend camping with nine other families from the Listowel Baptist Church at the Earl Rowe Provincial Park near Alliston. Donald Andrew of Olds, Alberta, son of Alex and Catherine Andrew, has spent the last two weeks visiting family and friends in and around Lucknow. Kenneth, Joy, Amy, Harriston and Angela Houston spent the weekedn with Elsie Houston. They .attended the wedding reception for Blain and Priscilla Car- ruthers at Ripley. Ontario NDP leader Bob Rae will be in the area this weekend to officially open the Huron -Bruce NDP Office in Dungannon. Shown here with Mr. Rae is Rachel, Katie and Tony McQuail all of whom hope the NDP will be a bit with voters when an election is called.
