Business for the dogs
Susan Wyndham's new business . is
already going to the dogs...or rather, the
dogs are going to the business. The
Lucknow Boarding Kennels are now in full
operation and business is off and barking.
Susan is the daughter of Lucknow vet
Brock Clelland and has been around
animals all her life. She and husband
Ralph operated a very successful dairy
farm in Crossfields, Alberta for 15 years
before moving back to Lucknow last sum-
mer to the very house she lived in as a
child.
"We looked around and were surprised
to find that there are very few boarding
kennels in the area," Susan says while
opening the door to the brand new building
they constructed this spring for the pur-
pose. "We looked around at the other ken-
nels we could find before designing this
one." •
The new kennels, located just at th dge
of the village, are bright, cheerfull an e
sound of happy dogs looking for a pat n
the head greet visitors. It was built enti -
ly by local labour.
Dog and cat owners can bring their pets
here for complete care. The $8 per day for
dogs and $5 per day for cats gets them a
spot with a 20 foot run, all the food they can
eat and lots of kind attention. Much of that
attention comes from the Wyndhams'
three children. Son Michael "is in charge
of the kitty room".
Over the recent long weekend, Lucknow
Boarding Kennels hosted 11 dogs from as
far away as Goderich, Listowel and even
Ottawa.
"It's like a motel for animals, I guess,"
Susan told the Sentinel while kneeling to
give a pat to the Irish Setter in the middle
run. "We've always done well with
animals so this type of business really
makes sense for us."
The big, spotless kennels include
washing facilities, a separate.area for cats
and enough room to house 30 dogs. The
Wyndhams also do brushing and ' `sununer
cuts" on the animals if requested,
although grooming is not actually part of
the business.
Since there is always the possibility in
this type of business that an un-
manageable dog might be a client, the ken-
nels are set-up so that the dogs needn't be
handled from the time they arrive until
they are once again claimed by their
masters.
One thing that surprised Susan when
preparing to open the business, was the
fact that there is no requirement for a
special permit to house dogs.
"Really, we didn't need anything more
than a building permit," Susan admits
"We do ask that dogs are up to date on
their vaccinations,"
Also, dog owners leaving their pet for the
weekend are asked to sign a form giving
the Boarding Kennels the right to order
any veterinary care that they feel is need-
ed during the dog's stay with them.
"We had one little dog in here that was
fine for a day and then got a slight eye in-
fection. We gave it some antibiotics and it
cleared up. Of course there's an extra
charge for the medicine."
Susan says she doesn't expext to have a
slow time for the business and that already
repeat business is coming back.
"We see nothing but growth," she says.
"We've had real good response and look
forward to making this our full-time
business."
When we stopped to ask the clients who
really count - the dogs - what they thought
of the care they receive at the Lucknow
Boarding Kennels, they all gave the new
business an enthusiastic wag of the tail
and a hearty "bow wow".
Yes, business is going to the dogs...and
that's just the way it should be.
The village's latest business venture, Lucknow Boarding Kennels, is off and runn-
ing. Operated by Susan Wyndham, with help from her family, the kennels are housed
in a brand new building constructed for the purpose. Above, Michael lends ,a hand in
the `kitty room' while, below, Susan has a chat with a client. (Rob Bundy photos)
