Lions exchange students with Belgium
Lions Club International is once again in
the midst of its annual student exchange
program and this summer, Lucknow has
been host to Sophia Geeraert of Belgium.
This week, Sophia is spending her last
few days in Canada after having spent just
over a month in the area. She is just one of
15 students from eight countries involved
in this year's student exchange program
sponsored by the Lions.
While here, she has divided her time bet-
ween Grant Chisholm and family, and
Joan and John Pollard.
The 18 -year-old Sophia hails from the ci-
ty of Oudenaarde, Belgium which is
located very near Ghent. She completed
her high school last spring is will enter a
university in October to study engineering.
As for her experience here in Lucknow,
Sophia says it has been worth every penny.
"It has been well worth it," Sophia told
the Sentinel this week. "Lucknow is such a
friendly place. Everyone knows everyone
else."
Sophia claims she hasn't been homesick
in the least during her stay in Ontario, and
says she found Canada "very different" in
lifestyle from what Belgium.
"It's very different," she said just
before heading off to lunch in Kincardine.
"There's more space and everything is so
much larger."
She also expressed her surprise at how
much food we eat here.
"Our meals at home are quite small,
Here, they seem very large. I think Cana-
dians eat alot."
Sophia is a very friendly young lady and
is very knowledgeable of our country. She
speaks four different languages including
English, French, Dutch and German.
When she returns home at the end of this
week, she says she will be expected to give
a report to the Lions Club in Begium which
sponsored her trip to Canada.
Next year, her family will host an ex-
change student from Canada and Sophia

Craft Festival good
but attendance down
The Lucknow Agricultural Society
reports a successful Craft Festival again
this year although attendance was down
slightly from previous years. This was the
18th annual Craft Festival held in
Lucknow.
Despite lower attendance, pop sales
were reported as quite high due to the hot
and humid weather over the two-day
event: Most crafters in attendance told
organizors that their sales were good.
Heather Howald, Miss Lucknow Fall
Fair, was on hand at the Festival to make
the draws for the three major prizes
awarded over the weekend. A clock made
by Norris Messenger was taken home by
Dan Leddy of Lucknow; the lawn chair
was presented to Eva van der Heide of
Denfield and the cooler went to Karen
Snow of Belgrave.
Many crafters donated items for free
draws over the weekend and the winners
included Clayton Alton, Reta Van Horst,
Lynn Schlacht, Brad Priestap, Julie
Pickett, Alvin Farough, Arlene Allen,
Dorothy Hyndman, J.D. Durnin, Carl
Bale, Nancy Thompson, Margo
Messenger, Scott Martin, Joanne Pleskat,
Andrew Mause, Audrey Whitefoot, Judy
Kane, Shirley Campbell, Gary Schultz,
Jackie Kennedy, Donna Jamieson, Ruth
Inkster, Dallen Wylie, Debbie Rhody,
Rena McNabb, Burton Shewfelt, and
Karen Snow.
Special congratulations should be of-
fered to the many workers, donors and
local businessmen who helped make the
Lucknow Craft Festival of 1988 such a
success.

says she is looking forward to returning
the favour.
During her month here, Sophia and the
other students ,pn the Lions Exchange
toured Ontario. They spent time in Ottawa
and Kingston, visited Niagara Falls and
Elmira, and even took a day 'at Canada's
Wonderland north of Toronto.
When we asked her what she thought of
the Canadian summer, Sophia smiled and
said "It's very hot."
"At this time of year in Belgium, it's
very rainy and cooler."
Lucknow has been host to a number of
foreign exchange students over the years,
and will continue to be thanks to the local
Lions. Each one leaves a little of
themselves while taking a little of our com-
munity back home when they go.
