Steven Rintoul of RR 2, Lucknow was . host, along with his family, to Jaret Ruehs, 15, from Aneroid, Saskatchewan for eight days. This was the second part of the 1988 4-11 Open House Canada' Exchange Program, which saw Steve visiting Jaret in early July. Aneroid, population of 100, is approx- imately 60 miles from Swift Current. Although small, the village boasts a bank, small store, post office, hotel and bar. Mail is not delivered to the end of your laneway here, you must go into town to pick it up. In comparing farms, Jaret noticed the difference in size. His family farm 2400 acres, which is considered medium in size; while the Rintoul farm of approximately 600 acres would be considered relatively large here. The Ruehs family run Angus cattle on pasture and grow a variety of crops but not corn. Due to increased feed costs, they are renting more pasture this year. The main crop is wheat, and although the winter wheat had suffered and the crop was poor, Jaret said the spring wheat was good thanks to the approximately three inches of rain they received in June and July. Lentils are also grown in the area and pro- vide a good return to the farmer. also grown in the area and provide a good return to the farmer. Both teenagers commented on the dif- ference in the terrain of the land in their provinces; the land around Regina being very flat but becoming hilly closer to Aneroid. The Ruehs family are also feeling the shortage of water, with lakes and streams drying up. Since the spring they have had six dust storms, some of which destroyed graneries in the area. Jaret noticed the air being much heavier here in Ontario. Last year they had very little snow, but temperatures can drop as low as -40 degrees. Jaret is the oldest of four children. The other children are Johan 13, Rebbeca 11, and Lysondra 10. Jaret Ruehs of Aneroid, Saskatchewan (left) thanks Steve Rintoul for his hospitality, as the 4-11 Open House Canada Exchange Program came to an end. Jaret flew home on July 27. (Pat Livingston photo) This was hot Jaret's first trip to Ontario. He has an aunt in Ottawa whom he has visited. While staying with the Rintouls, they visited the CN Tower, Ontario Place, Chi- Cheemaun, Niagara Falls and Marineland, and Dominion Roads, Goderich. A total of 10 4-H delegates from southwest Saskatchewan, along with two chaperones, made the rip to Ontario. When asked if he intended to farm, Jaret remarked "no, I'm going to be an architect." It was enjoyable meeting you Jaret. Good luck in your future plans. Plaque received from Jewish Fund "The Talk of the Town" Mrs Cyril Brown has received a plaque from the Jewish National Fund of Canada stating that a section of ten trees has been planted in Canada Park in Israel in tribute to Cyril Brown. This was donated by a Jewishfriend in Toronto. Sympathy is extended to the family of Rev. George Garratt, who passed away in Kincardine Hospital on Monday, July 25. Rev. Garratt served the three Anglican churches, St. Paul's, Ripley, Church of Ascension, Kinlough and St. Peter's, Lucknow for several years before his retirement. Bill and Peggy Henderson were joined by their family of Rev. John, Dorothy and family of Waterloo, Sandy, Patty and family, and Marg and Clara all of Toronto, at their cottage for a weekend family reunion. A word of appreciation to the unknown person that picked up the pension cheque on the sidewalk and returned it to the Post The Canada Employment Centre for Students asked Post Master Carrie Milne to look into her past and recall her first job as a student. Carrie's first job was working in the Lucknow Post Office. She worked from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. In those days the mail came in by train and the mail carriers met it with a horse and cutter in the winter and a car in the summer. Carrie remembers having to save and tie all of the cord that the letters came in and being told to wind it all into a huge stack. Carrie tied and tied all week and finally asked her boss what the purpose of this task was. He told her that he simply wanted to see if she could stay with the job. She passed the test and has been at the Post Office for the last 43 years, and has been Post Master since 1972. Her advice to students; If you are in- terested in the postal service; it is a good career. You learn a lot and meet a lot of people. Office. It is good to know there are still some honest people in the world. Mrs. Jennie Gregg, Paisley spent a few days with Elsie Houston last week. Together, they enjoyed the Lucknow W.I. bus trip to Aylmer, St. Thomas and London.
