Sportsfest '88 is fast approaching. Peo-
ple wishing to participate in this fun -filled
weekend event, August 19, 20 and 21, 1988,
should send in their registrations as soon
as possible.
Joelle Reavie, Sportsfest '88 Co-
ordinator for the Wingham Recreation
Department said registrations for the
weekend's activities are coming in quick-
ly. "It appears that hundreds of in-
dividuals are looking forward to a
weekend of fun and fellowship".
The official ceremony, to help kick off
this festive weekend is scheduled to take
place in Wingham at Cruickshank Park,
Saturday, August 20 at 9:00 am.
"This is one official ceremony that you
won't want to miss" said Marg Beard,
Sportsfest '88 publicity chairman. "The
committee has designed it in such a way
that the ceremony directly reflects the in-
tent of Sportsfest - to have fun and par-
ticipate. Instead of cutting a ribbon, plat-
form guest will help to kick off the
weekend event by demonstrating the first
actions of familiar sporting activities.
However, the equipment used may be
somewhat out of the ordinary!"
Invited delegates include Murray Car-
diff, Huron -Bruce MP; Jack Riddell,
Huron MPP; Melanie McLaughlin,
Ministry of Culture and Recreation; Jack
Kopas, Mayor of Wingham; represen-
tatives from Royal Homes, Western Foun-
dry, Wingham Business Association, Carl-
ing O'Keefe - Sportsfest '88 sponsors; Mike
Dunlop, President, Lake Huron Zone
Recreation Association; and Phil Beard,
Sportsfest '88 Chairman.
After the honourable delegates have set
the tone for the weekend's festivities, a
canoe -portage race, a scheduled Sport-
sfest event Will take place down the main
street of Wingham. Residents and visitors
will want to find front row seats to view
this event!
"This particular event will demonstrate
that that sporting and leisure activities do
not always have to be organized or design-
ed in the traditional manner. After all, how
many of us have seen people canoe out of
water!" said Beard.
This same philosophy is reflected in all
of the 25 events offered at Sportsfest '88.
Each sporting and leisurely activity is
organized in such a way that they en-
courage people of all ages and interests to
participate for the fun and fellowship
rather than solely for the victory.
Registration forms and information con-
cerning dances, accommodation, special
demonstrations, and other weekend at-
tractions can be obtained from your local
municipal or recreation office or by con-
tacting Joelle Reavie, Wingham Recrea-
tion Department, 357-1208.
