Bertha's first job was working as a private secretary for the president of a firm on King Street in Toronto. It was com- pany policy to stand for 10 minutes at 11:00 a.m. on Remembrance Day. Bertha's desk was next to the president's office and his office walls were glassed at the top so that when she was standing he could see her. Obviously if she was standing she wasn't working and when the president saw her he buzzed her intercom and continued to do so for the ten minutes that Bertha stood in silence with the other 4 girls in the of- fice. She was both afriad to go to his office and neglect the time of silence, and afraid of being fired for not going. After the 10 minutes had passed, Bertha entered her boss' office with trepidation. She bravely asked him if he had forgotten that it was November llth. "Yes, my mistake" he answered and Bertha didn't get fired after all! In fact she stayed with the company for 8 years. Bertha was just 17 when she started working and she earned $23 per week. Her advice to students: "finish high school at the very least, and then choose your calling".
