Genealogy Group
Wanita Fletcher acted as hostess for the
July meeting of the South Bruce Genealogy
Group which mt. on„July 14. Due to the
absence of Gwen Harrison, Mrs. Fletcher
acted as Leader. Isabel Munro read the
minutes of the June meeting and gave a'
financial report. A donation of $20 was
gratefully received.
A copy of the Sault Ste. Marie Branch
Newsletter had been donated for use of ttie
members. It had several useful maps. Two
more Early Marriage Books for 1858 - 1869
are now at the home of Gladys Arnold. They
are for Leeds and Grenville and Stormont
and Dundas. Since so many people were in
Eastern Ontario before coming to this area,
these books can be helpful.
A letter had been received from Irene
Robertson Crawford of Moncton with infor-
mation on her Colwell -Stewart ancestors.
Since 'Kincardine Twp. is working on a
history, all this information is valuable. In
this connection, members spent time at clip-
ping, copying, and pasting data from scrap-
books on loan. These scrapbooks are great
sources of information.

MVCA Experience '88
The Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority (M.V.C.A.) is participating in
the Experience '88 Program which pro-
vides employment for eight students (one
co-ordinator and seven field staff) from
within the Authority's watershed. The pro-
gram started June 27 and will run until
August 19.
'This provincially funded program tries
to combine a working experience with a
learning one. The main goal of the pro-
gram is to allow the students to acquaint
themselves with the actual operation, pro-
grams and projects of the M.V.C.A. The
main emphasis is on conservation and
resource management (such as stream -
bank and erosion control, forest manage-
ment, wildlife habitat and interpretive
trail development) but the students will
also participate in the daily operation and
maintenance of the Authority's Conserva-
tion Areas.
The Experience '88 Program Co-
ordinator's position is filled this year by
Cynthia Purvis who is presently residing
near Ethel. Her duties include clerical and
office duties, hiring the students and
organizing them. She is considered an in-
termediate between the Experience '88
crew and the rest of the Authority staff.
Her work term started on May 9 and will
run for 16 weeks to finish August 26.
Fall Reserve Conservation Area outside
of Benmiller is employing three of the
seven Experience '88 crew. Suzanne
Walker of Clinton, Frances Greidanus of
Londesborough and Darlene Buffinga, also
of the Londesborough area, will be work-
ing at tlie park doing gatekeeping as well
as general maintenance.
Three other Experience '88 crew
members will be working out of the
Maitland Valley Conservation Authority
headquarters, in Wroxeter; Frances
Smith of Brussels, Marlene Coulter of Gor-
rie and Charlotte Brubacher also from the
Gorrie area. These three students will be
periodically joined by the Galbraith Con-
servation Area Park Assistant, Mike
Grant of Listowel. He will spend most of
his time at Galbraith Conservation Area
assisting the park supervisor with park ad-
misions and general maintenance, but will
carry out the same duties as the rest of the
Experience crew when in. Wroxeter.
In addition to their regular duties, the
crew at M.V.C.A. will al5 +' ,,cipate in
education days. An orientation session was
held on the first day of work. The students
Were allowed to get acquainted with each
other, the Authority staff and the area
within the waters, ed. With the help of slide
shows, films and safety deinonstratiun
students were able to feel more comfor
table and confident with th( surroun-
dings. A second education du, will include
the crew taking a Red Cross First Aid
Course. The course will provide the
studer s with the ability to cope with
emerg nt> situations and to ensure a safe
summer for park patrons and themselves.
A tour of various sites and projects in. the
watershed will be held soon after the pro-
gram has started and a further education
day is scheduled for later on in the
summer.
The M.V.C.A. has been an active part in
the Experience Program since 1975 and
has employed over 160 students.
Addressing
the needs
HURON COUNTY - Since May of 1985, a
steering committee involved with address-
ing the needs of Alzheimer's patients in
this county has been meeting.
Over the past months, this committee
has scheduled an information meeting,
printed a pamphlet listing resources
available for the family of Alzheimer's pa-
tients and are planning for a future
workshop for caregivers.
Presently, the committee is striving to
achieve affiliate status with the
Alzheimer's Soceity of Ontario. The goals
of the society are education, public infor-
mation, fund raising and fainily support.
They need many volunteers to help meet
these goals.
Much of the ground work has already
been covered, but now the committee
needs individuals with, or interested in
Alzheimer's Disease patients to join. If you
are interested or need more information,
please call 482-3961.
