I went in there thinking this was their turf, and I had to make the effort. The fear is that you won't be as smart as the kids, that you will look pretty stupid in class." She found that the younger students did accept her, and in fact, she became their confidante and made some good friends. She was also fortunate to have a lot of support at home. "If Tim saw that I had some heavy duty studying to do, he would just take the kids and go for an outing." Even the children, Jenny, 11, David, 9 and Carrie, 7, pitched in to help. They did extra housework and David drilled his mother with flash cards while she did dishes to help her learn her chemistry nomeclature. Joan was chosen to give a talk to future adult students on two separate occasions. She told them her husband and three children had accepted the new wife and mom who opens yet another can at supper and does ponytails with one hand while balancing equations with the other. In addition to balancing school work and home life, Joan also found time to volunteer in her dentist's office, for some practical experience in her chosen profession. Dr. Malcolm Wood, St. Thomas dental surgeon, described her as "extremely well -motivated, a keen student and a welcomed asset to my office." In addition to her family, and the help she received from the excellent teaching staff at AVSS, she credits her close friend and mentor, Noreen Lanning, who went back to university herself, as giving her the encouragement she needed to try and succeed. For other adult students contemplating a return to school, Joan says, "Go and do it." UCKNOW by Mildred Loree The Talk of the Town Every evening during the summer we are blessed with hundreds of visitors as flocks of blackbirds settle in the trees and cattails along the edge of the mill pond. As they settle down they chirp and twit- tle and you would think they were ex- changing all the gossip of the day. A door slamming or any sudden noise and there will be complete silence for a few seconds — then a whirr of wings as they all take off in a cloud to circle around, then settle back down again and renew their chatter. Very early in the morning they take off again to go about their daily business, only to return again in the evening. Saturday, July 16 seemed to be a popular date for weddings.
