The Brookside editors are pleased to an-
nounce the winners of the Spring Writing
Contest. Many thanks, to all the students
who entered the contest. There were over
100 entries received.
In the primary division, first place went
to Caley Moore and the prize was a colour-
ing book and supplies. The honorable men-
tions went to Michael Alton, Angelique
Delberque, Gerald Johnson, Tammy Mid-
dlekamp, Mark Weir, Jordan Andrew,
Liesabeth Hartman, Warner Lohse,
Graham Cere, Brent Cameron, Taylor
Park and Erin Meader.
In the junior division, first place went to
Steven Cere and the prize was a kite. The
honorable mentions went to Larissa
Sproul, Matthew Thompson, Mike
Menary, Tania Lohse, Shannon Cranston,
Michael Puddy, David Adams and Kerri
Snowden.
In the senior division, first place went to
Keith Todd and the prize was a case of pop.
The honorable mentions went to Vanessa
Alton and Jodi Weaver.
There is a special prize to Mrs. Clarke
for her poetry contributions.
GRADE2
The students had a visitor by the name of
Mr. Matsuoka. He told us how to make
Japanese hats and told us a story.
They had a trip on Wednesday. They
went swimming and had a barbeque with
hots dogs and hamburgers. They went on a
fitness trail too.
GRADE3
On Tue. day, they went to Mrs.' .Ot-'
.tewell's farm. First they went to
Burgsman's, where they saw a deer. It
was cute, and they saw more things like
ducks, mules, donkeys and ostriches. At
Mrs. Ottewell's place they got two Mr.
Freezies and a can of pop and then went on
a nature. hike after Mr. Ottewell taught
them about beehives. Then they went to
Joey's house to see the raccoon, Rico.
They had a great day!
THE DINOSAUR DEN
The Room 4 Dinosaur Den communities
are almost finished and they are busy
creating their "Ideal Communities". How
would you like to live in Flowerville, where
flowers grow in the water at the beach? -

or in Rainbowville which has a giant craft
shop? Maybe you'd like to live in Chicken-
ville, where there are mountains to go All
the communities have things we need, like
police, doctors, stores, schools and fire sta-
tions and the students have added some
special touches of their own!
On Friday they had a delightful visit
with Mr. Matsuoka (Mr. Nao) from Japan.
They loved the story and paper folding!
Cathy Cairncross is our "Special Me".
GRADE4
They are learning about stamps. They
learned how to look up a stamp catalogue,
some stamp words as in, mint, used, block,
perforations, face value. They are sending
away to Nova Scotia for stamp
information.
ROOM 6 READERS
They have been studying trucks for over
a month. They found it interesting study-
ing trucks and recommend all kids to learn
more about them.
They brought toy trucks from home and
made up games to play with them. They
also read books and wrote stories about
trucks. They wrote letters to truckocom-
panies for research and to get some pam-
phlets. Some interesting facts about trucks
as told by the students are:
"I did not know what a chassis was and
now I know" -Chris Maize.
"I learned a lot about different makes of
trucks like Mack" - Luke Sproul.
I .didn't know that a truck with a flat
front was called a snubnose" - Nathan
Durnin.
GRADE5
Mr. Cameron, their former music
teacher who retired two years ago, came
to the classroom Thursday, June 9, 1988.
He sang with them with his guitar. He
brought his granddaughter, Jennifer. They
sand old and new songs.
GRADE 6
Mrs. Tebbutt's grade 6 class went to the
Wawanosh Conservation Area on June
10th. They were' split into two groups in
order to participate in the program "Im-
pacts on the Environment".
The leaders were Jayne and Esther.
They talked about how wetlands, forests
and animals should be conserved. They
also talked about pollution and tested the
river to see if it was healthy.
Students participating in the VIP Pro-
gram at Brookside School held a special
graduation ceremony Monday morning.
Following the presentation of thoughtful
skits by the students, below, t -shirts and
certificates were handed out. The
Lucknow Lions donated the money for the
shirts while School Trustee Tony McQuail
Land OPP Officer Cnst. Holmes presented
the certificates. Teachers Lois Tebbutt
and Paul Spittal were in charge of the VIP

Mrs Greta Stewart celebrated her
96th birthday at the home of her,son
Bill & wife Marie of Dungannon.
Along with other family members
present were her two daughters, Mrs.
Anetta Rabjohns of Detroit and Mrs.
Gwen Caesar of Dungannon.
