Inquisitive nature ..
Recently, at a Shriners' dinner, where
Megan and her mother were guests, young
Megan was caught throwing kisses to Ron
Cross who had driven Megan and Marg to
the Toronto Airport where the caught the
flight to Montreal.
A very sociable young girl, Megan has a
great memory for faces as well as a very
inquisitive nature. As she scoots around in
her wheelchair, determination showing on
her face, het mother quietly admonishes
her to keep her hands clean for dinner.
Such a display of communication bet-
ween mother and daughter leads one to
understand why they so strongly believe in
"support, not pity".
Megan has come a long way since
August of 1983 when doctors gave her one
week to a year to live.

Origins
Shriners, or Shrine Masons, belong to
the Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of
the Mystic Shrine for Northern America.
The Shrine is an international fraternity
of approximately 850,000 members who
belong to Shrine Temples throughout
Canada, the United States and Mexico.
Founded in New York City in 1872, the
organization is composed solely of 32nd
degree Scottish Rite Masons or Knights
Templar York Rite Masons.
Becoming a Shriner
In order to become a Shriner, a man
must first be a Mason. The fraternity of
Freemasonry is the oldest, largest and
most widely known fraternity in the world,
dating back hundreds of years to when
stonemasons and other craftsmen on
building projects gathered in shelter
houses or lodges. Over the years, the for-
mal Masonic lodges emerged, with
members bound together, not by trade,
but, by their own desire to be fraternal
brothers.
Masonry does not solicit members. No
one is asked to join, therefore a man must
seek admission of his own free will.
The basic unit of Masonry is the Blue
Lodge, where members earn the first
three Masonic degrees, known as Entered
Apprentice, Fellow Craft and Master
Mason. Following this, he can belong to
many other organizations which have their
roots in Masonry and which have Blue
Lodge Masonry as a prerequisite. When a
Master Mason has achieved the 32nd
degree Scottish Rite or Knights of Templar
degree, he can petition to become a Noble
of the Mystic Shrine (Shriner). (Note: The
old Light Lodge will hold a public open
house, 2-4 p.m., Sunday, July 3, Reunion
weekend) .
Shriners Hospitals
The Shrine supported various charities
almost from its inception, In 1920, the
organization voted to adopt its own official
philanthropy, dedicated to providing free
orthopaedic medical care to children in
need, and the first Shriners Hospital for
Crippled Children was built in Shreveport,
La., in 1922.
Today, Shriners Hospitals for Crippled
Children is a network of 19 orthopaedic

Little Megan Trachsel has been through a great deal during her short life. A victim
of spina bifida, she has required a number of serious operations and is in many
respects lucky to be alive today. Part of her recovery from the perils of this disease is
due in part to the support shown her by members of the Bluewater Shriners Club.
Here, Shriners Ron Cross and Ron Forster join Megan and her mother, Margaret, for
a photo. Megan and Marg were honoured guests at a recent Shriners dinner held in
Lucknow.
hospitals and three burns institutes, main-
tained and operated by the Shrine, where
children under the age of 18, regardless of
race, religion or relationship to a Shriner,
receive completely free of charge to the
patient, parent or any third party, any ser-
vice or medical treatment required.
Funding
Since 1922, when the first Shriners
Hospital was built, over $1 billion has been
spent building and operating. Shriners
Hospitals for Crippled Children. The
hospitals are supported primarily by in-
come from the Shriners Hospitals for Crip-
pled Children endowment fund, which is
maintained through donations and be-
quests from both Shriners and non-
shriners. Additional funding comes from
each Shriner's annual hospital assessment.
and fund-raising events sponsored by
Shrine Temples, Clubs and Units.
Family Centered Care .
Patients at Shriners Hospitals benefit
from a unique family centered treatment
approach. This philosophy stresses that
while medicine might heal the child's
body, tending to the child's mind and spirit
v
is equally important to his recovery. This
involves the family m all aspects of the
child's care and recovery, from providing,
where possible, a room for at least one
parent to be with the child through the
hospital stay to teaching the parents how
to care for the child at home. In addition,
specially trained personnel help the family
accept the child's illness or injury, deal
with feelings of guilt and frustration that
may arise, and counsel the family concer-
ning the special needs of the child and
other family members.
The purpose of all Shriners Hospitals is
to provide care to crippled and burned
children in order to help them lead fuller,
more productive lives. Shriners Hospitals
can accomplish their purpose more effec-
tively, by promoting the importance of the
family and helping it become a strong sup-
port system for the child.
The next time you see Shriners taking
part in a parade, wearing that distinctive
symbol, the red fez, remember they are a
brotherhood of men... dedicated to fun and
felIowship... but with a serious purpose.
