OBITUARY
AItIOHIBALD CURIiIE JACKSON
Archibald Currie J•ekson died sud-
denly at his home on Britannia road
at noon on Tuesday, victim of a heart
attack. He was in his seventy-fifth
plier,411sd aas born 1n Hullett town-
ship, near Auburn, it eon of Mr. and
Mrs. John Jat4soa. As a young man
he conducted a creat ship at Auburn.
was married to Mary Etta Gov -
ler forty -live years ago, and Moo after
his marriage purchased a chopping
mill, which he operated seventeen
years, at the end of which time he
farmed aim years before coming to
Goderich eight yearn age.
Mr. Jackson reoentty was made an
honorary life member of Morning Star
bodge, A., P. & A. M., Carlow. He
was a member of North street United
church, and took an at-tive interest In
the work of the church.
Surviving, besides his wife, are four
ehtldren : Lottie S. Jackson and
Laura M. Jackson, A.T.C.M., at home;
John, of Port Dover, and James, of
klmvale.

nail been sadly bereaved by the death
of their only remaining son, Dr. J.
Edgar *warts, at Canton, N.Y., on Fri-
day, December 13. Dr. Swarts was
reported to have been Irl only a few
days with tnfiuenaa. He was thirty-
nine years of age, • native of Ooder-
ich. Graduating from the Collegiate
Inetltute here, be obtaloed a teacher's
certificate at the Model School at Als-
ton. atter which he taught for a while

nine. Three brothers and a daugh-
ter predeceased him The daughter,
Betty Jane, was acetitentally drowned
four years ago whim data three years
of age.

Increase In Ships
Using This Port
A Total of 180 Freight and Pas-
senger Boats Outrun 1936 --
Better, by 38, Thea Last Year
Shipping in Goderlc•h made a sub-
stantial increase this year over last
year, according to figures obtained
from the local registrar of shipping.
This year 180 grain, coal, oil and
passenger steamers made Goderich a
port of•eall, as compared with 142 in
1934, •n increase of thirty-eight.
-Dight ship., including the passen-
ger steamer Georgian, are laid up here
for the winter. This number will
not be added to, it Is expected, except
for the arrival of the tug Wm. L. For-
rest. which is coming from near Wel-
land, where elle worked for several
months. This season whipping has been
unusually late.
The grain freighters had storage
cargoes, but two were "dipped," 1,000
bushels of wet grain being taken from
the Jas. 13. Foote and 50,000 bushels
from the' Brteoldo•, both being at the
mill.

The town council on Monday night
voted to accept the sum of $7,000 in
full settlement of all claims against
the United States Fidelity and Guar-
anty Company under its bond cover-
ing the late tax collector, Howard
Robertson.

Mrs. John D. Stewart, of Detroit,
visited friends in Goderich this week.
Her many friends have heard with
pleasure that lira. Hugh A. Luxton,
sister of Mrs. J. 1. Harrison, is im-
proving, after having suffered an at-
tack of Infiuettsa and pneumonia. Yrs.

in marriage to Russell Elwood Dren-
nan, son of Mr. mud Mrs. Tennant
Drennan, Bayfield road. Rev. F. W.
Uralic officiated.
The bride was lovely in a blue crepe
gown with silver metallic trimmings,
blue velvet hat and silver slippers with
matching accestsories. The couple
were- attended by kis* Evelyn Dren-
nan, sister et the groom, and Mr. Ed-
ward Souter, of CBntoa. The brides-
maid was toweed ih brown crepe, with
matching bat and aeveseurles in brown
and orange.
After the ceremony the bridal party
attended ■ wedding dinner at the
home of the bride's parents, where
about twenty guests were received by
Mrs. Morris. The place was beauti-
fully decorated In a pink and white
color scheme.
Mr. and Mrs. Drennan motored to
Toronto on a wedding trip and re-
turned this week, to take up residence
in an apartment on West street.

No Inquest Into Sudden Fatality

On Monday night. about 9 o'clock,
°real Edgar Steep, aged thirty-seven,
poisoned himself with a dose of strych-
nine and died at the door of a doctor's
office, where he had been taken to a
friend's car.
The young man bad been despondent
all day, according to hia co-workers
at the Western Canada Flour Hill.
but had not given the impretwlon that
he was to such a desperate frame of
mind as to commit suicide.
Dr. W. F. ()allow, coroner, who was
called when the man was pronounced
dead, conducted an investigation.
Strychnine packages found In Steep's
pocket were traced to a local drug
store. Dr. Callow announced that no
Inquest would he held.
Steep was married, his wife being
Frances Fitzsimmons formerly of
Clinton, and a few days before bit
death a son was born to them.
Deceased was a son of Yr and Mrs
Nelson Steep and he lived with his
mother on Regent street. He was
born In Goderich township, and came
to Goderieh twenty years ago. Sur-
viving, besides his wife and child and
parents; Is a slater, Mrs. Mites Fish-
er.
The funeral service will he con-
ducted at his home on Regent Street
this(Thursday.) afternoon, by Rev.
P. W. Grant, of Victoria street United
ehareh. The Interment will be In
Maitland cemetery.
