Madill Secondary School in Wingham, won the OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) triple jump, Midget Division over the weekend. Sharons jump of 10.80 metres set a new all Ontario record in the event. In previous qualification rounds, Sharon jumped 10.82 at WOSSA and 10.51 at the regional competitions. The OFSAA meet took place at the Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke. Sharon is the daughter of Richard and Dixie Askes, Lucknow. Craig King of Teeswater, also a student at F.E. Madill, took second place in the Midget Boys' discus event with a throw of 51.44 metres. Grade 1 Mrs. Bell's Grade Ones completed their bird study this week with several ac- tivities. First, each of them painted a blown out egg to look like their favourite bird adding wings, tail and beak. These beautiful birds are now flying on their tree. Then they put their bird book together and designed the cover. On Thurs. Grade 1 made their June bir- thday cake for Marlene Johnston and Mrs. Maclntyre. Their Grade 5 book partners took them outside for reading time. That was fun! Now that June is here we are finishing up on school fair entries. We hope to have many articles on display. Jeff Cranston is finding his crutches easier to use. He hopes to be back in good shape by the end of the school year. Joanne Harris and Chissy Kuntz are our birthday girls this month. Grade 2/3 The Grade 2/3 class are currently learn- ing how to divide in Math class. The 2/3s are also enjoying drawing the plants and animals of 'Down Under' Australia. Grade 5 The Grade 5 class is having a fishing der- by. So far, Jesse Park is in the lead with a 93/4 inch fish. Mr. Bennett is a close second with a 91 inch fish. The Grade 5s are starting Fall Fair pro- jects for next year and in Environmental Studies they are doing work on the Green House Effect, Tornadoes, Hurricane, Pollution and Acid Rain. In 1. strumental Music, Mr. Cayley says the Grade 5s are corning along nicely and just recently they got reading partners from Grades 1 and 2. Grade 8 The Grade 8 class is researching dif- ferent aspects of Agriculture. Many topics are being discussed such as: - how has agriculture shaped our province; - agricultural imports and exports. The class is making agricultural predic- tion for the year 2088. Their findings will be written in essay form and entered in a pro- vince wide competition. Their newspaper game "That's Life" is running smoothly and they are discovering how costly it is to have a family! The students are getting geared up for Ottawa and graduation. Grade 7/8 The Grade 8s are writing stories about their own personal creations; a super hero, a villain, the perfect crime and a scary setting. To help prepare for the set- ting aspect of this project, they took a trip to the school's most sinister room to test their powers of observation. All of the students are getting ready for field day on June 9th, weather permitting. B ROOKSIDE BROADCAST, The Kindergarten class finished their Dinosaur Unit and the booklets have gone home. They have had a visit from all the boys and girls who will be in their kindergarten class next year. They planted bean seeds and in two weeks they had grown about 18 cm. Now they are talk- ing about Zoo Animals in preparation for their trip to Grand Bend Zoo. Miss Mathers' Grade Ones had a mixed- up day recently as they experienced a "Backwards Day". They did their entire day in reverse and some of them even dressed the wrong way. Right now they are having fun learning about those prehistoric creatures - "Dinosaurs". Grade 2 They have been having furry visitors come to their classroom. They have had some dogs but only one so far. Grade 4 The Grade 4 class, Room 9, went to the Scotia Bank in Goderich on Wednesday, May 25th. There, Karen Clark showed them the cash stop card and took them to see the safety-deposit boxes and the vault. They were surprised to see how small the cash box really was. They thank Karen for the interesting tour, the magazines and the pencils. Mrs. Graham came to their class on June 2nd to teach them how to show perspective in their drawings. Dinosaur Den The Room 4 Dinosaur Den is making their two communities now (a "horse" community and a "big rig" community), and working on a booklet about their com- munities. They had fun on Friday; trying on new names - Alex, Jack, Samantha, Christina, Angelica, Ray, Shauna, Bill, and a host of other interesting people ap- peared in their room!
