Silver Lake Camp looks to the future
By Rob Bundy
Lucknow's Dave Hanna has a busy sum-
mer ahead of him. In mid-May this year
Dave took possession of King's Camp, also
known as Silver Lake Tent and Trailer
Camp. The site, located one-quarter of a
mile east of County Road One on Highway
Nine, is 22 acres of prime, lake front
property.
The property, . formerly owned by
Thelma Affleck, had been on the market
for some time and Dave saw the potential.
"My brother and I were sitting around
talking about what a great spot this would
be to own," says Dave while taking a
break from lawn -cutting over the
weekend. "We had heard an offer had been
made, but when that fell through I ap-
proached Thelma and here we are."
Silver Lake Tent and Trailer Camp, not
to be confused with the Silver Lake United
Church Camp located across the water, in-
cludes aproximately 25 sites intended for
seasonal trailer rental, a number of cot-
tages available for rent on a weekly
basis, tent space as well as a number of
cottages privately owned, on land leased
from the camp.
Dave, who has now moved into one of the
larger cottages on the property, has great
plans for the camp. He intends to expand
and upgrade the facilities, refurbish the
existing boat house, add a small store and
offer canoes and row boats for rent. There
are also plans to add playground equip-
ment and to establish a family camping
area.
To do this, he is relying on a lot of help.
The help at present is coming from cousin
Don Bell, Larry Smolenaars of the Kinloss
Store, and girlfriend Michelle Cook. Come
summer, Dave plans' to employ the ser-
vices of students looking for summer
work.
"There's a lot of work to be done here to
bring things up to scratch," says Dave
looking out over his property and wiping
the sweat from his forehead. "I'm getting
a lot of help from these guys."
Dave admits to loving the outdoor work
ahead of him and feels his experience in
dealing with people is well established.
"Every dollar that comes in from the
camp will be turned back into it until we
get it to were we want it," he says. "The
potential is here. It just needs to be worked
at."
Fishing is fine
With the right promotion, Dave hopes to
establish Silver Lake as a top notch fishin'
.hole. The lake is home to pike, bass and
pickerel and the Ministry of the Environ-
ment is currently doing a number of
studies on the area to maintain the water
quality.
Two of the four summer cottages
available for rent have already been
spoken for this year and, according to the
new owner, a number of requests have
been made for trailer space for the season.
"We want to move in some fire -grills,
reclaim some of the land lost to high water
levels, bring in land fill, maybe add more
sand to the beach area," says the 28 -year-
old Hanna. "It's going to be a lot of work
but I'm looking forward to it."
Besides the potential for attracting
tourists to the region, Silver Lake Tent and
Trailer Camp is the perfect spot for farm
families In the area to get away to.
"A guy could move the wife and kids up
here for a holiday, still work the farm and
be back to fish in the evening," says Dave.
"The right promotion is the key."
One look at the site and anyone can see
the potential there. With the hard work and
good business sense of Dave Hanna and his
team at ,the helm, watch for the Silver
Lake Tent and Trailer Camp to set its sails
for success.
In mid-May, Dave Hanna of Lucknow took over possession of Silver Lake Tent and
Trailer Camp near Kinloss. Over the summer, Dave and his work crew plan to spent
much time upgrading the facilities at the 22 acre camp in hopes of transforming it into
a viable tourist destination. (Rob Bundy photo)
