Taking advantage The provincial government is, quite simply, "making hay while the sun shines". Thanks to the provincial budget released by Ontario Treasurer Robert Nixon last week, the only residents of this province who won't be affected by the tax increases are those who don't smoke, drink, eat or wear clothes. Everyone else will be paying more to live here. The Liberals are taking advantage of a, couple of things with this budget. They were given an overwhelming majorityby voters last fall and therefore don't have to make too many friends with the budget...which they certainly haven't. They are also taking advantage of the relatively good economic times that Ontario enjoys and the fact that the huge number ofjobs available as compared to other areas of the country have increased the population considerably. This increased tax -base, one would think, would result in everyone paying a little bit less. But such is never the case. Instead, the government of this fair province is taxing us to the limit in an effort to cut the provincial deficit - by some $1.2 billion - and to bolster the coffers in case Ontario once again falls on tough times. There is some good in the budget, if you look past the fact we will be paying one per cent more for all our consumer goods as of May 2. More money will be spent on education, health care and on housing for the thousands of people who have flocked to Ontario in search of employment. Of course, smokers and drinkers never get a break in any budget, provincial or federal, so the rise in the price of a bottle of beer and a package of cigarettes goes without thought. We must suppose the government is doing the right thing in charging us all, every last one of us, moe to live here but somehow we always wish it would could be done differently. Buy this week, for next week the sun shall shine for the tax man...again. R.B. By Rob Bundy I have a little bit of paper that hangs above my desk here at the Sentinel office. I see it every time I look up for inspiration and although I have laid eyes upon it hun- dreds of times, I read it - really read it- for the first time this week. It's one of those little gems, a thought provoking lyric, that is signed by some fella named Anonymous. This Mr. (or Mrs. I suppose) Anonymous has written a lot of good things for we see his creditation on many of these precious thoughts. He's the same guy who also is attributed to penning the famouso "Go placidly amongst the noise and the haste..." prose that was thought to be written sometime in the 17th Century. So he must be pretty old. I think he (or she) also wrote Happy Bir- thday to You, didn't he (or she) ? He also made a donation to the Lucknow Fire Department recently as I recall. Who ever he was (she was), he (she) must have been pretty smart and full of in- spiration. I am suprised at the amount of stuff attributed to this brilliant scribe. Makes those of us who write for a living feel pretty insecure and inadequate, let me tell you. Anyway, who ever he or she was or is, I have a great deal of respect for him or her and this respect is renewed each time I have need to raise my eyes skyward and glance across the little piece of paper tack- ed to' my overflowing bulletin board. It reads: What to take on the path to success A helmet for the knocks. - A mop for the tears. A cushion for the falls. Earplugs for the gossip. A hammer to nail down promises. A key to open closed minds. A hatchet to open the closed doors. ON THE SIDE A gavel to command attention. And a friend for the good times And especially for the bad times. And always a sense of humour. Anonymous The reason I have printed this here for you is because it seems to be a rule that anything written by this Anonymous fellow is meant to be photocopied and passed along to others. I remember when my mother gave me one of the writings of Mr. (or Mrs.) Anonymous after I had a particularly bad day at school. It went something like, "For today I will resign myself to the things that I cannot change and will strive to change the things I can that must be." It was at least a dozen years ago that Mom left that photocopied thought beside my cereal bowl but she still has it taped to the inside of her kitchen cupboard. I know I can go there anytime and read the words of Anonymous. And that really is the beauty of this Anonymous person and his or her work. It lasts forever. If that was written by, say, Wadsworth or Dickens, you'd have to look for it in a dusty book hidden in the library. It certainly won't be found on my bulletin board or attached with yellowing tape to the inside of my ma's kitchen cupboard. I hope I'm never as famous as Shakespear or Byron. I'd rather be Anonymous. People remember you longer. Have a- good week! % I JUST GAVE IT A LITTLE POWEP ANO TUPNED oN ME// iT 70 years ago April 25, 1918 Birth of a Nation - The great moving pic- ture show, The Birth of a Nation, will be presented in the Lucknow Town Hall the afternoon and evening of Wednesday, May 1. This show was advertised to appear in Lucknow on January 17 but was held up due to stormy weather. The whole story will be given just as it was in the large cities. Get your reserved - seat tickets at Armstrong's Drug Store on Friday and after. Tank Battalion - Fifty recruits are urgently required from the Military District Number 1 for the "First Tank Bat- talion, Canadian Machine Gun Corps. Recruits should be aged 19 to 35 and it is not necessary that men should'belong to a University Corps, but they should as a rule have a similiar standing of educational efficiency. A knowledge of engineering and petrol engines is useful nut not essential. Ap- plicants can apply to any authorized medical examiner in the district for an examination. SENTINEL MOIRS 50 years ago April 28, 1938 Plans for a boys' band - A meeting that merits the interest and attendance of parents and citizens will be held in the Town Hall next Tuesday evening with views to organizing a boys' band in Lucknow, or if desired, a boys' and girls' band. The first steps to this end have been through personal contact with several par- ties in town who most probably would be interested. A meeting was also held this week, when the plan was outlined thoroughly and Tuesday's meeting is ex- pected to result in a definite decision. Animals adopt mass production idea - Livestock on the farm of Roderick Ross at Lochalsh appear to be concentrating on the idea of mass production. Within recent weeks, a sow gave birth to a litter of 16 pigs and two hereford cows each had twins. The swine litter we believe is the largest ever born in the district. In the entire brood there is not a runt or a blemish and all the 16 porkers are off to a good start. The mother can grunt with pride, if pigs have such a nature, to see her offspring all rooting for themselves. 25 years ago April 24, 1963 Low cost housing for seniors - Land value equity in the amount of $4,000 is all that would be needed financially in order to have an 11 -unit Senior Citizens Apart- ment Building erected in Lucknow. The project was explained at the Mon- day night meeting of the Lucknow and District Lions Club. The project known as Twin Pines Apartments is being sponsored by the United Co-operatives of Ontario in conjunction with interested individuals. and service groups. This is a non-profit project with the sole purpose of meeting the increasing need for respectable, low-cost apartments for the many elderly residents in this area. Fair Board brings Minstrel show - Generally speaking, it has been a long time since the people of Lucknow have had the opportunity to see a good Minstrel Show. Well, you can see a good one at the Lucknow High School next week. It will be staged by the Kinsmen of Kincardine with jokes adapted for a Lucknow audience. The show is sponsored by the Lucknow Agricultural Society 10 years ago April 26, 1978 Gaunt chairs committee - Murray Gaunt, the MPP for Huron -Bruce, has chaired a committee that recommended the OHIP premium increase be withdrawn and the Ontario provincial government present alternatives to it. "With almost anyone else as treasurer, we wouldn't be in this situation," says Gaunt. Treasurer Darcy McKeough was "completely uncompromising and repentant." The Liberals and New Democrats have backed the Conservative minority govern- ment into a corner over the 37.5 per cent in- crease in OHIP premiums proposed by the recent provincial budget.
