Nine Ripley girls encounter great outdoors
There is more to surviving outdoors than
knowing how to start a fire. That's why on
April 4th, nine girls from the Ripley area
gathered to start a new 4-H project titled
"Encounter the Outdoors." The first
meeting of the Clarkes' clubs was held at the
home of Mrs. Cathy Farrell.
They began the meeting with a game.
They then elected our executive as follows:
Lori Aitchison - President, Terry Bowers -
Vice President, The secretary and press
reporter - rotating.
After completing the first chapter in their
books they headed outside to start some
fires. After building each of the various
types they decided to light the Indian or Star
fire since it is best to roast hot dogs on. They
ended the meeting with hot dogs and baked
apples. Thanks to Sandra MacDonald and
Mrs. Cathy Farrell for leading this Club.

Checked on Sapsuckers
Each spring in the past it has been possi-
ble to see a bird drilling rows of small holes
in the bark of the maples in Gore Park
across the road here. These holes filled with
sap and the bird returned later to drink the
sap for food. The pesky English sparrows
could not understand what was going on and
eventually left this bird to its own work. The
bird was the yellow -bellied sapsucker. Also
the sap attracted insects which the sap-
sucker ate for its protein or meat. Now for
years we have not seen "our bird". Another
tree here it always came to was a
"Georgia" Pine here for its sap.
Last Friday forenoon a bird accompanied
by sparrows flew into this tree. Outside the
back door here we watched close by. The
bird had the sapsuckers actions. It did not
have the colour of the yellow -bellied sap-
sucker but it had its actions. It was real
black in colour andiarger in size, just a few
yards away. So we kept thinking about it.
So we hunted up sapsuckers in the "Birds
of Canada by P.A. Taverner, New and
Revised 1940." We learned that one here last
Friday was a Cut -Throated or Williamson's
Sapsucker - unmistakable - very local range
and rare in Canada.
