The students at Brookside School, along with every other school in the county, kicked off
Education Week on Monday with a giant balloon release at 10:30 a:m. Staff and students
braved the chilly temperatures to stage the release and with the high wiFds early in the
week, it is expected that at least some of the balloons will travel a great distance. The
Board of Education is offering a prize for the balloon which is returned from the farthest
away. (Rob Bundy photo)
Friday was 'hat day'
By Connie Bruce
and Shelley Husk
Kindergarten enjoyed hat day on Fri-
day. There were many interesting hats but
unfortunately they only had half the day to
enjoy it.
Grade 1/2
It was fun. to have "hat day" on Friday.
Many of the Gr. 1/2s had an interesting
hats and received house league points for
wearing them.
This week the class continued to work on
their wheel booklets, by classifying.
`things' according to the number of wheels
they have. We are writing "Marvellous
Me" books.
Grade 2/3 •
Since Wednesday was a beautiful sunny
day we decided our flowers needed to be
transplanted. We went outside to complete
this task of transplanting our flowers.
Friday was "hat day" and we all had fun
wearing our hats for the day. We also en-
joyed making "hat booklets" in the
afternoon.
Grade 3/4
Grade 3-4 has had a very busy week in
the library, as everyone has been given an
ocean creature to research for'Mr. Dennis,
and also a land animal to research for Mrs.
McIntyre.
Everyone now knows what 'en-
cyclopedias' are.
A course around the schoolyard has been
set up for phys-ed class, and everyone will
be getting in fantastic shape.
We have started an Environmental
Studies Unit on Fishing Communities. We
will be learning about fishing th different
parts of Canada.
Grade 4/5
Grade 4/5 played the final game for the
cheddar cup this week. With only one hand
on the stick (the opposite to the hand they
write with 1 the Mini Hockey League
1 M.H.L. ) was successful in defeating the
Rink Rats with a score of 2 to 0.
After shaking hands. the cheddar cup
was presented to the captain of the winn-

T1 Tr1T T1 T1 Tl '
ing team. A banquet of crackers and
various types of cheese was enjoyed by the
members of both teams as a conclusion to
the game and the completion of our novel,
"Mice At Centre Ice".
Grade 5
All work is progressing well in Grade 5.
We've worked quite hard for the past while
and are quite pleased with our results.
The graphing unit in math went ex-
tremely well. Also, our fossil and dinosaur
books turned out well.
We are finally caught up with our novel
and we are, enjoying both our reading and
coke centres.
Grade 6/7
This week in Grade 6/7 we have been
talking about conserving wildlife.
Some people have been improving on
their Science Fair projects for the county
Science Fair.
The Grade Six group have been reading
novels. On Monday the Grade Six group
had a reading test and the results were
very pleasing.
On Thursday, the Grade Sevens has a
history test and on Monday our class will
be having a Geography Test.
Grade 8
Grade 8 has just started a novel study
using a book of their choice. We have
created `heart -stopping' stories and uni-
que automobiles. We are very pleased with
our effort and results. We find that as the
year gets closer to the end, it is beginning
to be fun!
Band
The band is hard at work, practising for
their concert on May 6 at 8:00 p.m. at the
Community Centre.
We hope the strong community support
of previous years will continue.
