by Jill Sellars, Grade 7
I have chosen to compare Nellie Mc-
Clung to Emily Stowe. I am using the
following criteria, personal facts or
characteristics, specific contributions and
the importance of contributions.
Emily Stowe of Brantford, Ontario was a
hard worker. She was born into a Quacker
family and at the age of 15 she began
teaching school in Norwich, Ontario and
soon became a principal at the Brantford
school. She really wanted to be a doctor
but the University of Toronto would not ac-
cept her because she was a woman. She
later went to the United States to learn
medicine and later returned to Canda .to
open a clinic where women who were shy
about discussing their medical problems
with men came. Thirteen years later the
law was changed and women were allowed
the right to attend Canadian Medical
Schools. In 1876 she and other women
organized the Totonto Women's Library
Club. They discussed the lack of rights for
women and wanted women to have the
same rights as men. Later in1917 with a lot
of hard work women were allowed to vote.
She later established the Ontario Medical
College for Women. Later Emily was ac-
cepted at the University of Toronto. Emily
Stowe died at the age of 72 and should be
remembered for what she did.
Nellie McClung of Chatswork, Ontario
was the youngest of her family. In 1880 she
and her family moved to Manitoba. She
became a school teacher. Nellie liked her
work but she thought it was exhausting.
She got married and was forced to quit
teaching. She became an author and made
$25,000. She joined the Christian
Temperance Union. This group was
against alcohol and tried to get rid of it.
Since women weren't allowed to vote at
that time, Nellie did everything in her
power to get them to change the law about
women's rights. She worked at it and soon
the law was changed. She then moved to
Alberta and was elected to the Alberta
Legislature, she also became a Governor
of the Canadian Broadcasting Corpora-
tion. Nellie McClung died at the age of 78.
Nellie will be remembered for what she
did.
I think both women worked really hard
at what they accomplished and deserve to
be remembered.
