Message from Minister of Education
It seems particularly appropriate that
the organizers of this year's Education
Week have chosen the theme "Dare to
Dream". By dreaming, we expand our
horizons and experiences; we move
beyond our everday realities to new
possibilities.
And isn't that what education does? It
opens the doors to learning; it is the key to
the realms of curiosity, knowledge and
imagination.
As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of
Education Week, it is also fitting that our
theme includes a challenge for tomorrow.
It is a dare to the people of this province,
whether they be students, parents or
educators, to build on the strengths of to-
day's educational system to ensure that it
continues to be accessible to all Ontarians
and'is relevant to the changing demands of
the future.
Those demands will become increasing-
ly diverse. The educational process is
already a life-long experience that goes
beyond formal schooling. Adults are seek-
ing upgrading skills at the same time that
more students are considering the oppor-
tunities of a co-operative education that
combines classroom learning with world -
of -work experiences.
I invite all Ontarians to attend the
special events and displays taking place
this week throughdut the province to see
the expanding role of education in Ontario.
I would also like to thank those who have
worked to make this celebration of educa-
tion a success.
We have in Ontario a strong educational
tradition built upon a partnership among
all community members. Let us take steps
this week, and through the year to come, to
strengthen this partnership and encourage
our students to strive for their dreams.
Chris Ward, Minister.
Julie Cleland: "It is fun outside at recess
time.'
Nathan Rivest: "I liked going to the
library."
Tom Symes: "I like going to gym class."
Tim Visser: "It is fun, to play soccer and
floor hockey."
Jamie Furness: "I like printing and
spelling."
Cherie Conley: "I like playing outdoors
with my friends at recess."
Newspaper Club
At our school we have a newspaper club.
Our first meeting was on Monday, March
21, 1988. We started talking about a
newspaper and what should go in it! Then
our principal, Mr. Pike started calling out
ads, and you would put up your hand if you
wanted that ad. You could also work in
pairs. After you got the ad you wanted, you
would go downtown and see if they wanted
an ad from you. You asked them how
many units they wanted, and if they
wanted anything special in their ads. The
units were 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12. After they told
you what unit size they wanted, you would
report that to Mr. Pike. After that was set-
tled Mr. Pike came m to our rooms, to give
our class four CERTAIN ads the
classroom had to draw up for the paper.
Then Mr. Pike would pick the BEST ads' to
go in the paper. Other than drawing up
ads, you could also write a report for the
paper, such as, newspaper club, new
teachers, skipping club, cross country etc.,
and they will be in this paper too! Finally
the newspaper is finished that was A LOT
of fun! So, if it wasn't for the
NEWSPAPER CLUB you wouldn't be
reading this paper right now!!! Amy
Austin, Grade 5.
Prinicpal's
remarks
The students and staff of Lucknow Cen-
tral are pleased to present to you m the
following pages, a mini history of our year.
The ads that you see within these pages
are all L.C.P.S. originals designed by our
students for local businesses. We would
like to thank these people • for their
cooperation and support.
A special thanks must go to Pat and the
staff at the Sentinel for their patience and
encouragement.
I enjoy Education Week, as a chance to
pause, and reflect over the joys of
teaching, learning and sharing together.
Each year, our school lives become so
much more than just reading and writing.
Our days are filled with numerous,
numerous activities to enhance our
children's emotions, social and academic
life.
I hope that as you read our mini history,
you, too, will remember fondly, your
school days.
The theme for Education Week this year
is dare to dream. Since this year's
kindergartens will graduate in the 21st
century, my dream is that these students
will receive the basis for a vibrant, fulfill-
ing life. Wiliam Pike.
