To the Editor,
I would like to respond to your article,
"Everything is on sale" which appeared in
the Wednesday, April 13, 1988 edition of the.
Lucknow Sentinel.
The paragraph I particularly object to is
as follows and I quote - "What many stores
do, and we'd have to single out grocery
stores as the culprit more often than not, is
to mark items up anywhere from 50 to 300
per cent from the wholesale price, then of-
fer it "on sale" at 10 per cent off."
This statement is so far fetched that it is
almost comical. It is so far fetched in fact,
that I have to wonder if this was printed on
purpose to provoke sensational responses
from retailers.
Retail strategy is directed by consumer
response and you insult the intelligence of
our well informed customers .of today.
If you really believe what you print you
should be out looking for a grocery store to
buy instead of worrying about whether or
not the Toronto Star is opening a branch of-
fice in the vacant building on main street.
I have to question the integrity of an
editor who has such a reckless regard for
the truth.
The Lucknow Sentinel I remember had
much higher standards than this.

To the Editor,
The annual March campaign for the
Kidney Foundation is now complete and a
total of $456.50 was received. Thanks to the
volunteers who helped with this year's
campaign: Cora Cranston, Hazel Hackett,
Mae Hunter, Isabel MacPherson, Gloria
Murray, Marie Scott, Marg Stanley and
Sally Ritchie.
Through advances in medical
technology, more and more cases of
kidney disease are being detected and the
demands on the Kidney Foundation and
care centres are increasing accordingly.
The Kidney Foundation is working to im-
prove the quality of life for patients requir-
ing this constant and costly therapy.
Thank you for your support.

A stone's resurrection
after 50 years in tree
About the turn of the century, James J.
Henderson, the grandfather of Jim,
Donald and Bill Henderson, had a cement
works on a parcel of land just west of the
entrance to what was then the village
dumpsite, now used by the Co-op for
storage.
His home was on the south-west corner
of Havelock and Ludgard Streets and he
used to walk through a field to his place of
business where he spent the day making
different sized tiles for wells, culverts,
drains, etc. The field through which he
walked is now the lumber yard recently
owned by the Hendersons.
One day, years ago while on his way to
work, James picked up a large stone and
placed on on the crotch of a young, sturdy
ash tree. Through the ensuing years he
watched the stone become engulfed by the
tree's growth until no part of it was visible.
Early in the spring, as Bill drove past
the site, he noticed that the large ash tree
had been cut down. Through curiousity, he
went to see if by chance the man operating
the chain saw had made contact with the
stone.
Fortunately they had made a cut a short
distance below the place where the stone
was lodged. Now being aware of its
presence, the man kept free of the spot as
they cut up the trunk and split it so the
stone was finally released.
Bill- McPherson, a worker at the lurnber
yard, brought it down to Bill Henderson
who prizes the stone because of its history.
When weighed, the stone tipped the scales
at 108 pounds. It had been in the tree about
80 years and for at least 50 of those years
was completely buried in the body of the
tree.
