the Lucknow Legion Branch 309, and Librarian Fran McQuail view the new VCR, TV

New venture brings
videos to local library
Thanks to the Lucknow District Lions,
Lucknow Legion Branch 309, some per-
sonal donations and a matching Wintario
Grant, the Lucknow Library now boasts
ownership of a VCR, TV and stand.
• The local library presently has a small
selection of VCR tapes available to the
public on a .no charge basis. This is a new
venture for Bruce County Libraries.
The library is entering into a co-op ar-
rangement with the Ontario Library Ser-
vice - Saugeen, to gain access to a larger
number of tapes, to be used for programm-
ing and made available to the public. The
tapes are basically eductional and
documentary for children and adults, with
a smaller selection of entertainment tapes
for children.
The tapes must be ordered in advance
and are available on a first come, first
served basis, kr overnight loan.

preschoolers at the Lucknow Library this
spring. Tales for Twos will run for six
weeks, April 22 - May 27, Fridays, from
10:30 to 11.30 a.m., for two and three year
olds. Storytelling, . songs, games,
fingerplays will encourage participation.
There will be a limited number of spaces,
so preregister now by calling the library at
528-3011 or Margie Lougheed at 528-3607.
This will be a good introduction to the
library and prepraration for Story Hour.
Millions for education
The Provincial government will in-
crease operating grants to Ontario school
boards by an additional $50.3 million,
Education Minister Chris Ward announced
today. Details of the grant calculations
were mailed to school boards today.
The increase will bring the total
operating grants for boards to $3 billion,
891.7 million for 1988.
Ward said that because of further pro-
jected enrolment increases in Ontario
Schools the government decided to in-
crease the amount of the grants from the
previously announced $3 billion, 841.4
million.
The grants include $61.8 million as the
first instalment of a three -year -phase-in of
funding commitments made in the Throne
Speech — $22.6 million for the four-month
period from September to December of
this year for the reduction of class sizes in
grades 1 and 2; $13.4 million for the pur-
chase of computer hardware and soft-
ware; $16.8 million for textbooks; $6
million for learning materials and $3
million for the implementation of in-
termediate science programs. The total
also includes $193.6 million for the exten-
sion of the separate school system.
Ward said that the base operating grant
of $3 billion, 636.3 million, combined with
the $193.6 million for separate school ex-
tension and the $61.8 million first instal-
ment payment, represents an increase in
grants of 7.2 per cent over last year's ad-
justed allocation of $3 billion, 630.9 million.
