The team found the larger ice surface a challenge but they met the Hanover team head-on and played a strong game at both ends of the rink. Earl in the first, Jeff Porter sizzled one past the Hanover goalie to put Lucknow ahead 1 - 0. With fans cheering their respective teams, the play continued to be end to end and very fast. Both goalies robbed the shooters time and time again. This pace kept up until the final minute of the final period when Hanover pulled their goalie for the extra attacker. The Lucknow boys dug in and maintain- ed good puck control until they could find the open net to clinch the win. It was Jeff Porter who finally found the mark: With a shutout under their belts, Lucknow returned home proud of their ef- forts under the direction of coaches Gerry and Steve: Game two was played in Lucknow on Sunday last and Hanover was lokking for revenge. They came out quick and manag- ed a one goal lead after the first period of play. Dwn by one heading- into the second frame, Lucknow realized that this Hanover team would not be a push -over. Our boys settled down and played a solid defensive game. It was Jeff Porter scoring twice within 20 seconds to give his team the lead. Ian Paolin, Colin Becker and Luke Sproul drew assists. Before the end of the second period, Stuart Rintoul scored from Trevor Moffat and Colin Becker and Luke Sproul added one of his own unassisted to give Lucknow a 4 - 1 lead. Lucknow came out and played strong third period by adding another goal. Ed Courtney picked up the pass from Sproul and rifled it into the net with four minutes remaining in the game to give Lucknow a 5 - 1 decision. Curt Humprey and Graeme Hunter played a good game between the pipes for Lucknow. The Hanover team were mighty good sports during this series and proved to be great opposition for Lucknow. It was refreshing to see both teams sharing the ice to display their respective banners. Now that Lucknow has captured the WOAA Group B Novice Division Cham- pionship, they will advance to the Grand Championship Finals to be played in Durham on Monday, April 4. Best of luck to the team who have had a great season and have shown they can play together as a team as well as any in the league. Pride remains intact for Sepoy. Bantams Sepoy Bantams The Lucknow Sepoy Bantams played in the Hanover Hockey Tournament over the weekend and came away with their pride intact knowing they had given their best. They showed their best ability against stronger teams and are to be proud of their efforts. In their first contest of the tourney, Lucknow downed Oshawa 7 - 5. Paul Helm anchored the team in the net as Brad Mur- ray led the offense with three goals and two assists. Other goals came from Dale Preistap, Donnie Gammie and Rod Crich who had two. The Oshawa team plays in an 'A' league and was a very tough opponent for the Lucknow boys. Only great hussle and superior tearr work allowed Lucknow to contain the explosive offense of their opponents. Game two of the weekend saw Lucknow hand Caledonia a big loss as they skated to a 6 - 0 win. Stan Kikkert dug the puck out of the cor- ner late in the first to set up Mike Vandervelde infront of the net to get the team on the scoreboard. Mike scored one more and drew an assist as Stan netted his own later in the game. Also scoring in the game was Brad Mur- ' ray, Rod Crich and Donnie Gammie. Allan Kikkert took the shut -out. Come game three of the tourney, Lucknow met Flamborough and again skated to a win. Lucknow opened the scoring right off the opening after a flurry of shots on the Flam- borough goalie. Donnie Gammie finally hanged it in and assists went to Murry and Crich. A sleepy defense allowed Famborough to take a one goal lead into the dressing room after two periods but Lucknow came out flying in" the third to take the win. Goalie Helm looked good in net and Coach Gerald Murray must have said just the right things to his boys as they stormed back with two unanswered markers in the third. Murray and Preistap were the marksmen with assists to Gavin Hunter, Crich and Vandervelde. The final game for the Lucknow team in this tourney came Sunday morning when they lost to Kincardine. Kincardine would eventually win the tournament. Lucknow, for a variety of reasons, could only ice nine skaters in this game and just couldn't keep up to the pace set by their op- ponents. The team was outshot by a three - to -one margin, which kept Paul Helm busy in the nets. The two Lucknow goals were scored by Gammie with assists to Murray, Crich, Dennis Park and Russell Sutto. Throughout the tournament Lucknow gave their best effort and skated a clean game every time. In many cases their 14 penalties over the four games were much less than their opponents. Good work, team, you should be quite proud of your efforts!
