The Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-03-23, Page 11Local boy takes gold
at Guelph Pentathalon
Jean-Paul Greenwood, of RR5 Lucknow,
took a gold medal in the sport of Modern
Pentathalon at a meet held in Guelph on
March 19-20.
Jean -Paul's althetic ability in horesback
riding, fencing, swimming, shooting and
cross-country running netted him 4,598
points out of a possible 5,000 to earn to in-
terclub award.
The five -event weekend was an introduc-
tion to fencing for the 13 -year-old Jean-
Paul and his 10 -year-old brother Joel. Both
boys were quite competitive for their age
group and were able to duel with com-
petitors older then themselves.
Jean-Paul rode a perfect round in jump
riding even while using a strange horse at
Campbellville.
The swimming competition held Sunday
found him at the Centennial Pool in
Guelph. Here Jean-Paul captured top spot
with a score of 985 out of a possible 1,000.
The youngster has been training for two
years with the Kincardine Kippers swim
team.
The fourth event of the weekend was the
pistol -shoot. As a junior competitor, Jean-
Paul used ,an air pistol to shoot at the sta-
tionary targets and again placed very high
in the field.
Cross-country running, the final event of
the competition, was held over a flat
course under severe weather conditions.
Despite this, Greenwood's enthusiasm was
undampened as he came very close to lap-
ping the senior competitor who had started
minutes ahead of him on the course.
Coaching for the weekend included Miro
Beran, a former international athlete from
Czechoslovakia, as well as Ulnar Vaikla, a
former Russian team pentathlete, and
Janice Bolton from National Fitness In-
stitute of Toronto. Riding phases were
organized by Sharon Pass and Jane
Casteman of Touch and Go Stables who
provided the horses for the event.
Jean-Paul Greenwood, who is a Grade
Seven student at the Ripley District
School, previouslt won a silver medal in
the -Canadian Pony Club's Tricathalon held
last spring. As well, he and his mare
Lightning won second place in the Novice
Tricathalon held at the Mohawk Raceway
last May.
The Lucknow and District Sports Complex Fund received a $1,500 boosts this week as
Joe Dunsmore, a sales representative for Molsons Breweries Ltd, was in town to
make a cheque presentation to treasurer Rod McDonagh. The fund raising efforts of
the Sports Complex also got help this week as the proceeds from the Kinsmen Annual
Skate-a-thon were donated to the cause. (Pat Livingston photo)
