Ken Keyes addresses
Bruce Chapter RNAO
The Bruce Chapter of the Registered
Nurses Association of Ontario recently in-
vited Ken Keyes, MPP and Parliamentary
Assistant to Elinor Caplin, to speak to the
group on behalf of the Ministry of Health.
The Weather Hill Inn, Port Elgin, was
the site of the dinner meeting and the infor-
mal discussion which followed Mr. Keyes'
address. Nurses from Lucknow. Ripley,
Kincardine, Southampton, Port Elgin and
Owen Sound had an opportunity of discuss
health care needs for their clients as well
as a number of professional issues of
concern.
Mr. Keyes highlighted new services,
both provided and contemplated, in health
care today. His talk centered on communi-
ty based services needed to meet the the
growing needs of the elderly.
According to recent projections, the
number of elderly Ontarioans will increase
by 50 per cent to 900,000 seniors by the year
2,000.
With 96 per cent of seniors continuing to
live in their own residences within the
community, the indication is for a continu-
ing need for a broad base of community
services.
Mr. Keyes was unable to pinpoint
changes in the core programme for com-
munity health nurses, although he did pro-
mise to send additional information to
those who had shown an interest in the
matter.
Keyes highlighted the formation of the
Women's Health Bureau and the Regional
Women's Services throughout Ontario.
Four pilot birthing centres are currently
being developed. This has occured as a
result of the Ontario Task Force on Mid-
wifery which produced a detailed proposal
to integrate midwives into the Ontario
Health Care System.
The Ministry of Health is currently
working on developing standards and pro-
tocols for midwifery education.
Elinor Caplin reactivated the Nuring
Manpower Committee to identify and deal
with the current shortage of nurses in the
province. Lively interaction around the
table developed this issue at the meeting.
Equitable renumeration for added
responsibility in acute care as well as com-
munity services and long term care seem-
ed to be the basis of the comments receiv-
ed from the nurses M attendance.
Recognition for added nursing skills was
another hot issue that was debated during
the meeting.
The next meeting of the RNAO will be
held Monday, April 4 at Harthy House in
Walkerton. Eleanor Ross, president of the
RNAO, will address Bruce County nurses
on the trends in nursing. Visitors are most
welcome but reservations are required by
calling Lynn Sitar at 396-2639 or Nancy
Elliott -Greenwood at 395-3515.
