HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Lucknow Sentinel, 1988-03-09, Page 21Page 20—Lucknow Sentinel, Wednesday, March 9, 1988 ' Cyril James Brown Cyril James Brown passed away at Wingham and District Hospital on Satur- day, February 27, 1988, in his 72nd year. Cyril was ' born in Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire, England on September 18, 1916. He was the youngest of three brothers and two sisters. He was the sole remaining member of the family. At the outbreak of World War II, Cyril joined the Royal 4ir Force. He came to Canada to train under the British Com- monwealth Air Training Plan and was sta- tioned at Port Albert, Ontario.. He met his wife, the former Dorothy Nixon of Lucknow, and married on March 28, 1942. Besides his wife, he leaves to mourn his passing one son, Edward and his wife Nan- cy of Lucknow and one daughter, Carol and her husband Graham Devitt of Waterloo. Also left to mourn his passing is one grandson Darryl Devitt. At the close of the war, Cyril came to Canada to reside permanently. He joined the staff of Dominion Stores before pur- chasing the Lucknow Fruit Market in Lucknow in 1954. He and his family have resided here since that time. Cyril was a member of Branch 309, Royal Canadian Legion for over 40 years and a Legion service was held at the funeral home on Tuesday evening. An Old Light Lodge service was held the same evening. Cyril was a faithful member of the Lucknow Presbyterian Church , session, choir and quartet for many years before his health failed. Cyril will be remembered by many as the owner of the Lucknow Fruit Market before his retirement in 1975. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. William Henderson at the MacKenzie and McCreath Funeral Home, Lucknow, on Wednesday, March 2. Spring burial will be in South Kinloss Cemetery. JOHN WILLIAM HOGAN William John Hogan, of Goderich, died at Alexandra Marine and General Hospital on Monday, February 29 at the age of 78 years. Born in Ashfield Township, September 16, 1906, he was a retired farmer and a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church, Goderich. He was predeceased by his parents Patrick Hogan and the former Margaret Foran; one son Patrick and a brother Cornelius. He is survived by his wife Marie An- toinette and three children Donna and George Collinson, of Goderich; John Hogan, of London and Paul and Dona Hogan of RR 3, Lucknow. He is also survived by five grandchildren Robert, Krista, and Leasa Collinson and Dawn and Colin Hogan. A Funeral Mass was heldbat ST„ Peter's Church, Goderich on Wendesday, March 2 at 10:30 p.m. Prayers were held at the Mc- Callum and Palla Funeral Home on Tues- day evening, at 8:30. Reverend Father Terrence McNamara, of St. Pe'ter's Catholic Church, Goderich was the officiating clergyman and Mrs. Martina Schneiker was the organist. Pallbearers were: Gerald Lassaline, David King, David McIver, Kerry Hogan, Jim Hogan and Richard Cote. Burial in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Kingsbridge. Day of Prayer in Lucknow The Lucknow World Day of Prayer was held in the Lucknow United Church last Friday. The service which was observed, with its theme of Open Doors, was written by the women of Brazil and voiced many economic and spiritual problems that exist in the world today. Members from Lucknow's United, St. Peter's Anglican, South Kinloss Presbyterian, Lucknow Presbyterian and the Lucknow Reformed churches led in readings and prayers during the special service. Lorraine Brophy and Betty O'Donnell performed a drama about the story of Ruth and Naomi. Marion McFarlane sang a lovely solo during the offertory while Tony Stickings handled expertly the duties at the organ. A time..of fellowship followed the service and was most enjoyed by all in attendance. South Kinloss W.M.S. The latest meeting of the South Kinloss W.M.S. was hosted and directed by Mrs. Bruce Hamilton on March 1. Other direc- tors at the gathering were Mrs. Eva Burt and Mrs. Bruce Colwell. Mrs. Leonard Clarke welcomed all with a reading from the "Glad Tidings" on prayer. The W.M.S. Purpose was read in unison by all present. Mrs. Colwell lead the Bible Study on the importance of prayer in our lives. Mrs. Hamilton gave a reading entitled I Planted a Garden'. The roll call was answered by 14 members with "What new or unusual plant will God nurture in your garden?" Taking part in the prayer circle were Mrs. Vera.Schmidt, Mrs. Janine Hamilton and Mrs. Harry Lavis. Mrs. Schmidt also lead in some delightful hymns throughout the afternoon meeting. Various business matters were dealt with including the World Day of Prayer that was held last Friday. Be sure to circle April 5 on your calendar. At 8 p.m. on that day the Thank Offering meeting will in- clude a talk by Mrs. Ruth Thompson on her trip to Russia. The meeting will be held at the home of Jesse Johnston. More planning towards the May 4 centennial celebrations was also undertaken. Chris Colwell has been asked to speak on his adventures in Australia at the World Scout Jamboree at the June meeting of the Kinloss W.M.S. Mrs. Bruce Hamilton lead the Mission Study with personal glimpses of Russian people. She gave us an indepth look at the church and the various services held in • that country. If one was outside our doors that day, they would have heard our members raising their voices to sing Rus- sian Orthodox hymns. Mrs. Evan Keith gave the offeratory prayer and Mrs. Fraser MacKinnon lead all in the closing prayer. A delicious lunch followed served by the hostess and directors.
