Black Lab
By Teresa Jefferson
And Ruth Anne Durnin
Kindergarten I students have been
reading Bear stories this week and next
week as we do some workabout bears. We
have been making graphs and we also
learned about the number seven.
Miss Jewitt's Grade One class really en-
joyed the visit from Rachel Cameron's
nine Black Lab puppies. They were so cud-
dly and cute. The class has been busy lear-
ning all about the clock and talking about
Friends.
Miss Mathers' grade ones have been
discussing the important times in their
lives. We have learned how to tell time -
the hour and the half hour. In Environmen-
tal Studies, we just finished talking about
the food groups and the importance of
eating nutritious foods.
The Dinosaur Den is definitely enjoying
the Olympics! It's amazing • to see the
athletes in action! For Art this week we
tried movement drawings of our favourite
event. Also for our theme of children at
work, we've learned about Reuben, who,
raises rabbits to pay for school books, and
now we're meeting Pandra. She's a moun-
tain girl who spins wool and looks after her
family's sheep. We compared our day to
Pancha's day. Serene Fox is our Special
Me this week.
On Monday Mrs. Ottewell's Grade 3
class saw a movie called The Snow Queen,
and then we wrote stories. This week our
class is learning to multiply. We are also
pups visit students
BROOKSIDE
doing Olympics Booklets and are having
fun. Last week Mrs. Graham came and we
did stencilling.
The Room 6 Readers had pancakes on
Pancake Tuesday. They were kind of
small but they were good anyway. We are
reading about the daredevil Evel Knievel
because we have just finished studying
motorcycles. He was trying to jump the
Grand. Canyon in 1968 with a jet motorcy-
cle but Navaho Indians and the United
States government wouldn't let him. The
canyon is a mile deep. All the boys think he
could have made the jump!
Grade 4 is studying Inuit people. In the
library, we aredoing research on Arctic
animals. There are two groups. Two peo-
ple are doing research on the same
animals. We are making trivia cards with
the information we found. Two more peo-
ple have joined the factor facts club. Con-
gratulations to Debbie Ross and Trevor
Moffat.
Grade 5 Portable 1 is proud to have
Michelle MacGillivray representing the
Junior Division at the Legion Speaking
Contest in Lucknow. Good luck Michelle!
Mrs. Tebbutt's Grade 6 class had had the
senior -side computer in their room for the
past few weeks. This week, thanks to Joan
Ferguson, we have been able to use her
game called "Winter Olympics" in which
you use your skill to man a bobsled or to
jump a ski ramp. Cedric Puddy brought
his disc called 'Oregon' in too, and we had
to plan a trip into the unexplored, unsettled
areas of Oregon during the 1800's. They
have been fun.
Our grade 7 class is going skating on
Feb. 19 in Lucknow. Our home-ec class
made pancakes on Wednesday, February
17. We completed our Valentine activities
on Monday the 15th. We went home early
on Friday and had to finish them Monday.
Friday we had a special treat. A few of our
classmates made up pizzas, subs and hot-
dogs (they were delicious). We had a
geography test, and hope to get them
returned with good marks. We are study-
ing Canada's East Coast. We are at the
stage of experimenting with our science
projects which are due on March 1, 2 or 3.
On February 25, Grade 7 students are go-
ing to go on a trip to the Wawanosh Conser-
vation Area fora "snow shoe shuffle" if
there is enough snow.
Room 8, Grade 7 students started Olym-
pic centres on Thursday, February 18. We
say a second good-bye to Jamie Chisholm
who is probably in Florida, soaking up the
hot sun. We started research on our
science projects. We would like to say good
luck to Maribeth Dawson who will be
speaking in the Lucknow Legion Public
Speaking Contest Friday, February 26.
Religious oppression in Russia
On February 18th the Ashfield
Presbyterian W.M.S. was held at the home
of Mrs. Neil MacKenzie.
Leadelrs for the meeting were Mrs.
Stuart MacLennan and Mrs. Richard
West.
The meeting opened with an Orthodox
prayer and hymn taken from our Study
Book on the U.S.S.R.
After repeating the purpose in unison the
Devotions. "on Love" from 1 Corinthians
Chp. 13 was taken by Mrs. West.
Session No. 2 "Orthodox Worship and
Spirituality" on our Mission Study was
presented by Mrs. MacLennan. There are
almost 50 million Christians in Russia.
Religious oppression still exists in the
Soviet Union, though it may be cleverly
disguised. We compared our own. Church
experienced with those of the Soviets.
Hymn "Blest be the tie that Binds" was
sung followed by a review of the Glad
Tidings and a reading "Valentine's Day"
by Mrs. West.
The President "Mrs. Donald Simpson
took over for the business part of the
meeting. Roll call was answered by giving
"A Russian News Item." The World Day of
Prayer is to be held at Trinity on Mar. 4th.
Letter of thanks was read from Friend-
ship House in Goderich. Mrs. Allan Mac-
Donald invited everyone to a games night
and presentation of Sunday School Seals to
be held at the church on Friday evening
Feb. 26.
Mrs. Simpson gave the courtesies and
the meeting closed by repeating an Or-
thodox prayer. A social time followed
when we enjoyed a typical Russian lun-
cheon of Beet -vegetable salad, cucumber
and sour cream, and rye bread
sandwiches.
